Evo 5 Speed 4.11 / 3.73 Final Drive Pros/Cons/Experiences

Hi All,

I have a 2.3 stroker and GT35R turbo along with the usual bolt ons.

The car was making 313kw atw (or ~420whp), its currently being rebuilt and im getting some headwork and some other performance mods, so hopefully i'll be around the 350kw atw (or ~475whp) mark on Dyno Dynamics Dyno.

Since i had the new setup i find the gears are just too short and the car revs so quickly. So i started looking around and decided to try a 4.11 HKS final drive. The goal was simply to make the car nicer to drive daily and highway cruising (ie: lower revs in 5th) and so it wasnt so quick reving.

Below is a chart showing the speed in gear for a 5 speed Evo with stock 17" Rims and standard tyres.

So the 4.11 is being installed at the moment but i wanted to hear some opinions from other people who have changed the final drive.

I would also like to hear from anyone who has done some comprehensive testing on what final drive is the best for straight line acceleration for cars with stroker motors and high horsepower.

Any other performance testing done ie: Time Attack with a different final drive would also be very interesting.

Thanks

I would also like to get some peoples opinions who have ran these two(4.11 & 3.73) set ups. I'm planning on running a 3.73 setup.

nice info i also think that the stock final drive gear is to short i turning about 4k rpms in about 80mph. and my car just has stock turbo, head, block with basic bolt ons.

interested to see what people say.

bump for u

DITTO! I love taken my evo on roadtrips and stuff, but am tired of cruising at 4K+ for hours at a time.

i know going with a 3.73 will slow acceleration BIG TIME!(from what im guessing), so i def want to get some peoples opinions on this. im around 400wheel maybe a lil more with stock turbo, motor, head with meth. i plan on getting around 600ish with the built bottem and meth so dont think itll be to much of an issue.

something that I don't think you guys are considering is what extra strain will be placed on the driveline by changing up the final drive. The 4.11 does't seen too extreme but the 3.73 I would think to be a little to hard on the driveline coming out of the hole in racing. Just my thoughts.

FQ400, e-mail John Shepard. He has this exact setup on his Evo 8. And he's usually prompt on returning e-mails.

I agree, the taller the FD the more strain on the driveline, the 4.11 is 8% taller, so not a massive differnce, i agree the 3.73 is prob going a bit to far.

4.11 is the way to go with the 2.3L. You will hate the 3.73!!! It's just to tall, you will lose to much performance. Buschur runs 4.11 gears on Project White.

the 4.3 is the other final drive ratio that is actually the optional homologated final drive for competition, but never came installed on the car.

the evo X's are so heavy it's final drive is 4.7, to try and keep it fast.

^^ the 5 speed (GSR) Evo X is 4.7, the MR is 4.0

I like the MR's 4.0 , seems to work well with the fast shifts and minimal boost pressure drop on gear shifts. Makes a 200kw atw evo keep up with much higher power Evos with 4.539 FD and manual

I thought the 4.307 was homologated but only part of the Ricardo box?

Ralliart made a box with the option of a 4.307 with the help of Hewland Engineering, Ricardo also has a box that is GroupN Homologated.

Everything is broken down here. http://candcperformancefabrication.c...nformation.pdf
