Question EVO IV engine performance mods - need help

Hello all.

I currently own a Lancer Coupe, well to most here it would be a mirage fwd evo IV conversion, using the evo4 gearbox, drive shafts.

After almost 5 years off the road its time to get her on the road again, and with that its time to spend some dosh on making her perform even better, as is the engine in way of perfomance mods is pretty standard (unless i was never told :P ), below is a list of whats been done:

Engine: EVO IV
Exhaust: 3 1/2' from the turbo back, HKS Hyper muffler.
Parts: HKS Blow off valve, HKS air filter, intercooler.

So what should i do next? i am by no means a mechanic nor an expert on how most things work and or why i should do something, so instead of just handing over the money to my mechanic i thought it might be time to educate myself a little and find out what other evo iv owners have done in the way of gaining extra performance from their babies.

So any help or advise would be extremely great.

Cheers
Michael

Ok, before you do anything else go and check your fueling as evo 4's don't have the best fueling system....they have smaller injectors and fuel pump than the later models.

If you haven't done it then get a bigger fuel pump and get the fueling checked with this.

The reason I say to do this is because I have read about other evo 4 owners who have had their engine die on them from fueling problems, me included as I killed my engine at a track day.
Sometime during the day I leaned out and broke a ring land on one of the pistons.

A rebuild later with forged parts and its back in buisness, it wasn't a cheap fix and was something I would have rather not had to do.

any particular brands? evo 5 and up will fit?

What sort of issues do you run in to? as in not pumping enough fuel? or something completely seperate? like i said i am new to all this.

I'm running a Walbro fuel pump and i'm happy with it so far.

The thing is, I had no idea that I was leaning out, the only indication was the big could of white smoke my car produced as I went round the track.

I also dropped oil pressure at the same time as breaking the piston and ending up spinning a bearing.
As when I pulled into the pits and had the car idle you could hear and feel a knocking noise coming from the engine.
Got back home and got a workshop to strip the engine and pretty much found the whole thing was stuffed.

When I got my fuel pump installed I got the shop to do it for me, as I didn't really want to fiddle around with something important like fueling.

I can do ehaust, turbo, brakes, suspension and interior but I haven't worked up enough experience to go working on the fueling system.

Well if the fueling is all good then just apply what other evo drivers have done to their cars.

An evo6 RS turbo (or TME RS) would give a bit of improvement, or if you want to splash out you could get a new ECU, which if tuned right would stop you from grenading your engine.

My next mod will be getting an Autronic ECU as i'm at the stage that I can't go any further without risking my engine killing itself again.

Another evo forum to check out is the lancer register which has drivers who have all makes of evo's so theres tons of info there.

EDIT: just to answer your question a few posts back, yes evo5 and up fuel pumps will also fit, but if you're going to the trouble of pulling everything apart you might aswell fit something with a bit more head room for growth.

Have a look at my build thread mate, I used deatchwerks 255lph fuel pump cheaper then walbro 500 and same quality can hardly even hear its operation aswell as comes with a 3 year warranty 150nzd.

evo 5 or 6 fuel injectors and ecu as you can reflash them, evo 7 rs turbo with titanium weel is a good one also far faster spool direct bolt on replacement, list is endless, but I found the main thing is 3" exhaust, evo 5 upward ecu, aftermarket fuel pump, evo 5 or 6 fuel injectors and this gives good gains and def a tune afterwards my evo iv is making 205kw at the wheels standard internals on 18psi that's not pushing it at all.
