Well you can say the SAFC is only used at off road racing events and is unchanged in everyday driving. I don't know how picky you places are but it might work

There are cops and there are PIGS. PIGS are some of the HIGHWAY or CHP that are biased against imports, that dont have anything better to do then cite cars that look slightly modded.Mind you anything non american.

Granted speeding and unsafe driving is valid but a dam exhaust is too loud that is just stupid.

You dont see harleys getting pulled over when those things are super loud.. There is a bias in CA for so called fast and furious crowd and any IMPORT... Ever since that movie came out its gotten worse here.

Worst movie EVER !! LOL

So far ive been lucky but others havent.

yes, i had to go 3 times for a swapped honda civic i had. i needed to get a BAR sticker because of the swap. anything after your cat is not covered by CARB, so you dont need to worry about it. they only worry up to the cat, anything after that is just decible levels cops get mad about, the ref wont care. yes, they will not like the safc, hide it. i had a vafc on my car when i got it ref'ed, i needed it to mod my fuel to allow me to pass the sniffer, it was hidden in my glovebox. any intake you have that is aftermarket needs a visible carb sticker, if you dont have one with it, put the stock stuff back on. but like i said, you pay $30 to see him. if you fail for any reason, they list those reasons and the next time you go back to him its free. 3rd time costs $30 again, 4th time free and so on. but ya, took me 3 times to pass because i got another ref who was more stingey than the previous. good luck, its not all that bad to go through, just make sure everything visually is ok and you'll pass the sniffer. once you get that cat on there, right before you get into the ref beat on the car, drive it hard. this will heat up the cat and it will work more effectivly (if you're worried about failing the sniffer).

Taking the cam gears off will l be a PITA. Why not set the cam gears to 0 and put your timing belt cover back on?

And as for what you can and can't get away with at the state ref, I would try to make the car look as stock as possible. I wouldn't count on the ref overlooking certain things, especially if they're not CARB legal. You'll be wasting more time if you have to go to the ref twice.

im now considering ditching my hks hi power after i go to the ref. would it be a waste to have a 3" downpipe and cat delete with stock catback? im gonna try and sell the hi power first then go for the perrin cat back and paint the muffler black to look like stock.

It sounds like the WORKS stealthworks muffler along with their resonated intermediate pipe will meet your requirements. You should also get a high flow cat. That'll give you good performance while appearing stock from the back.

*UPDATE*

i went to the state ref this week after putting back on my stock downpipe, cat, exhaust, and airbox. i passed smog, but not the visual. i didnt have the top of the stock airbox so they marked that down, also told me to put my stock cam gears back on because i have a cut valve cover, and for some reason my CEL came on even though it was off before i got there. so i have to go back after correcting the errors they marked and have them do the entire test again. what a world.

does anyone know how much is a stock valve cover, the side part that covers the gears. i think it might be cheaper just to hide the gears than swapping them out.

Great news! It's especially good to that the 264's passed the sniffer test. I kinda of knew it would, since my 264's passed on my 94 Talon. Unfortunatley with the referee station you have to look competely stock in the engine bay or you won't pass the visual and any CEL's will fail you instantly, the ref was cool on that one. Well you're almost there, the sniffer test was the hardest part. Good luck, I've been playing this smog game with my cars for over 25 years.

Here Here, they pull over this guy for some mods but they let millions of gas sucking, smog belching, soccer mom driven, Gigantic SUV's with 20in spinners drive around unhindered. WTF

This is so funny. Two years later and I do a search on state ref, and I find my own thread, in the same situation asking the same questions.

Anyways! I gotta question, will the stock airbox clear my aftermarket intercooler piping? I'm not sure if I have to put my stock box back on since I only got cited for a modified exhaust this time.
