My suggestions for Cheap Easy power adders.....Adjust the throttle cable, there is a lot of play in it from the factory. Tighten all the clamps on the intake system. Many are loose or become loose with time. Zip tie all the vacuum lines,....the little squeez clamps sometimes don't hold too well. As for weight savings, I agree with the others. There is a large piece of steel that can be removed from under the steeting column. It weighs in at 2 Lbs. This isn't much....but to be honest this piece serves no purpose. Simply remove the 3 screws that hold the plastic to the steering column, remove the bottom half and you will see 2 screws holding the piece of steel. Just remove it and reinstall.

But then even most of them and half of the kids driving new ones can't afford them anyways. You should have kept your junker honda or get a new junker to cruise around. Buy a mid-life crisis car when you can actually afford it. Thats my idea at least. Live within your means man.

For as harsh as this sounds, I kind of agree.. You clearly stated you didn't want to treat it like a honda (I assume you meant the butcher-mods kinda thing) but in the same post you state you want to make cheap/free mods..

This car is neither cheap or free, why would you expect your mods to be that way?

You do get what you pay for.. There are common sense upgrades you can make, and there are cheap modifications.. but you have to be honest with yourself.. a boost controller is $30-50, a gauge is $40-$120.. exhaust mods range from $35 to $700 or more.. These are reasonable prices for these modifications.. But if you can't "Afford" to do it right, your better off leaving it alone. At least until you can afford to do it right the first time or your family expenses are taken care of first.

If you are in a situation where its a struggle to make payments on this car, and maintain it, and take care of your family.. Take care of the family first, nobody would think any less of someone who is responsible and caring.. A car just isn't that important, trust me, in a few years the car will be paid off, and you can modify it all you want with the money you were using for payments.

Unfortunately, "Free mods" aren't going to gain much horsepower, you can help things by using a less restrictive filter, or upgrading your plugs.. tightening your hoses and keeping the car properly maintained.. always run correct air pressure in your tires, shed as much weight as possible without affecting safety. But most of these mods are really to help reliability or allow the car to run a little better, indirectly it may add horsepower. Even something as simple as going on a diet (if you weigh 250 pounds, lose 25-50 pounds.. it will make a noticable difference) Don't take offense, its not for everyone, but there's really a performance gain in that, among other benefits.

The cheapest easiest way to make your car faster.. Learn to drive.. spent a few dollars doing an auto-x or get out to a drag strip and have fun with it. Best money spent.. Don't abuse the car, just learn to drive it correctly.. It'll make an even bigger difference than a few free hacks..

well malibu and trinababe. i guess you convinced me that mods are not free. after working in audio video retail, me, out of anyone, should know you get what you pay for 90% of the time. you can buy a 50" magnavox TV for $999.99 or get a hitachi, mitsubishi (the best big screens IMO, and what i have in my house) toshiba or sony for maybe 1400-2000 and see 500% better quality in picture and lifespan. but as far as going to the limit of assuming id rather spend the $ on my car to mod it over my daughter? wrong. i budget myself to live comfortably with my wife and daughter and i get whats left over after bills are paid, food is bought and car payment has been sent. saving $30-$100 a month for 12 months just to get an exhaust is a long wait.

one of the main reasons i asked for free garage mods was not only to gain small bits of power, but to also get a hands on feel for the engien and how the car really works. ive never been partial to a person who spends all kinds of money just to make the car faster without understanding why or how. kind of like going to Harvard or Yale and buying grades and not going to class... make sense? if im going to make my car faster i want to know how and why, so if there is room for improvements, i may able to prevent hazards or possible problems. that knowledge will also help me make smart decisions when future mods and upgrades come into the picture.

sorry to rant about all this, but i do pride myself in having a daughter and having a recaro baby seat for her says some of that. i guess im just defending myself to what trinababe said, because i dont want to have the image that a car is more important to me than family.

but free mods do sound appealing and any chance i get to tinker under the hood relax me.

I wasn't trying to attack you. But I will only buy what I can afford. $30-$100 extra after taking care of your family is pushing it in my book I guess the statement you said, "Like most Evo owners I am broke." kinda hit me. I dont think many of the Evo owners are broke, if they were they wouldn't (Or shouldn't) have bought a car that costs $500 a month. Thats just the way I am though. If you wanna tinker with yer car and learn how it works, I would rip apart a small motor or buy a $300 junker that barely runs (Or doesn't) and fix it up for as cheap as possible. You will learn how a car works that way I guess if you need to save for a year to buy an exhaust, you could always try to make one yourself for half the price if you like to tinker.

There is plenty of info on this forum and plenty of other sites that will tell you exactly what will make HP and why it will. If you just want the scientific explainations then you should just read up them. Don't worry about having the baddest Evo in town. The Evo is a bad *** car by itself. And trust me, the more and more you mod, the less and less you will be able to "enjoy" the car as often. Youll get to a point like most where you want a bigger and bigger turbo, more and more HP which will lead to more and more twisted metal, exponential cost, and more and more downtime. Enjoy the car you bought I never recommend people to buy a car they WILL want after a bunch of mods. You should want the car before any mods, then just use mods to enjoy it more

Always remember, the more money you put in your car, the more money it is going to cost you in broken parts, tuning, and time.

take a screw driver, drill or something.

take your catalytic converter out.

stick your choice of stick and stick it in there until it disassemble itself.

then shake that crap out, (the honey comb).

now you have 10 more whp and committed a federal crime punishable by $50,000 in fines and 15 years in jail.

all this for free.
