do i need to upgrade the valve train

Would an evo with 31000 miles need an ugraded valve train if hks264/264 put in?
Is that too high of mileage to just swap cams?

at first the rave was yes... then people found out... i don't need to do that. do look up cam installs tho and bleed the lifters and what not and get someone that knows what they're doing.

Actually there is still some question... David Buschur (who I probably respect over all others) says "no". However, Revolver has posted pictures of why you would need to (showing pictures of actual retainer to seal contact) in another thread.

With the pics you mentioned, were the HKS cams installed or Revolver's?

HKS 264's on the flow bench, with a keeper spring showing contact with the seal prior to max lift... You need to read this thread: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...r+seal+contact

I'm personally running 272's on OE springs and retainers... however, after reading the above thread, and not finding the answer I want, I'm going with the Revolver set. If for nothing else, it will not hurt, and I will have more "headroom" to spin the engine up if I choose.

I'm curious as to what your cam gear settings were when this happened. I have not seen another incident like this, and would like to know a little more about how it happened before I do a cam upgrade.

i had HKS cam gears set at -2 on both sides... i got these numbers from Vishnu..

they are telling me that i "over reved" the motor, but i've never been past 7500 rpm (i usually shift at 7k) ... it blew on me in 2nd gear around 5k...

cost of repairs = $1500.... if i could have done it all over again i would upgrade the entire valvetrain and go with a Cometic headgasket, probably port the head since it would be off the car...

edit: i had 12,400 miles on the car

The safe play is to upgrade. I have no clear idea of what the problem is with clearances but there seems to be one on certain heads but not on others. I guess its like Dirty Harry's line "Do you feel lucky?" If revs are to remain under 8k then the only necessary reason to upgrade would be to ensure that retainer to seal conatact will not take place. It is would be good practice to get a test spring and actually check for clearances. Since I ruined a new engine, I am not comfortable with pushing limits which put me at risk for thousands to save hundreds.
