broken front diff?

well, i noticed a vibrating/rattling noice coming from the front of the car a few months back, i didnt think anything of it until last friday at the track. the first race the clutch spun, after that i launched at 4500. but the car drives different now, the clutch seems fine, i tried downshifting fast, but it grabs normal. when i start off from a stop, in the lower rpms i feel a slight slip, but its like sort of jerky, then if i give it gas, i hear a noise coming from the front and can feel it in the pedals. i dont notice it after 4700 rpms. but it will do it in all gears at lower rpms. the sound is like a repiticious knock or somewhat of a grind, but not too much metal. i jacked up the front of the car, and spun the drivers side wheel forward, the other wheel spun backward like it should, i didnt really notice any binding, but i could hear noise from the transfer case when i put my ear right up to it. something is deffinatly wrong, but its hard to put my finger on it, i do notice it when the wheel is turned slightly.

my question, does this sound like a bad front diff? what does a front diff sound like when its going bad? also, what else might this be?... could it be a broken flywheel, or clutch hub? what would that feel like?

tomorrow i will be draining trans fluid , if i find chunks im ganna send the case to TRE for a new diff install.

I hope you find some help and info on this issue.. it sounds serious. What year/model is your car? it may help with the diagnosis.

I have a front diff in a TC I just purchased. It is in perfect shape and has about 4000 miles on it. I wont need it as I am putting in a Quaife in in it's place.

Let me know if you might be interested. -- I am not sure what it is worth.
I can get pictures on Monday if you are interested.

Yeah, $400 plus $100 shipping plus down time.

Swapping the front diff is really easy once you have pulled the TC. A replacement diff might be a good solution assuming it is just the diff that is bad.

I am not actively trying to sell the diff, just trying to help.

Good luck,

The spider gears are still in good shape. Here is a pic I took while dismantling it last week.
I have never seen a diff for sale before so I don't know what it is worth. Maybe $250? Does TRE sell diffs as we could use that as a baseline.
I could have it Cryoed for a little extra if you are interested. Let me know and I will find out an exact price -- I am having the whole TC done when the Quaife arrives and adding the diff to my batch probably wouldn't add much more cost.

Best of luck man, I hope you get this all worked out. Ever since I wrecked my evo, I have understood the pain of not driving one for whatever reason. Best of luck

heh, you guys are ganna get a kick out of this... i hit a rock a week or so ago, and it smashed up the under support bars, and pinned the downpipe to the subframe. this noise and vibration i was hearing was that. my freind and i diagnosed it today, all diffs are perfect, he noticed no slipping, which i interpreted slipping from the rumble of the exhaust on the frame. and there is no more than normal shavings in the fluid. only a bit of shavings on the magnetic plug. which means my transfer case, and tranny is still in great working order!! yeay!!
