Evo Clutch install

I put an ACT street disc clutch in my evo over the weekend. I did it on the floor of my garage and it took me about 10 hours total. I did it alone and was really surprised by how easy it was. The hardest part by far was getting the tranny out and back in the rest was just nuts and bolts. I could have had it done a lot faster, but I put the tranny back in and bolted the tc back up to it and then I realized that the springs on the shift fork were backwards so I had to pull the tc and tranny again to fix the springs. I did get some help to lift the tranny back in there but I was able to pick it up and put it in place while my dad put the jack under to support it for a second. I would definitely say you need two people to lift the tranny back in unless you are a pretty big guy. I am 6'5" and weigh 240lbs and I was having a hard time getting that thing under control and I can bench press 350+. All in all it was a pretty easy install, if you have the knowledge and tools, and I did not run into any major problems.

How high is your car up on the jackstands? And how long can you keep the tranny up in the air while you're maneuvering it back onto the engine? Props to you since you can bench 350!

I believe the Evo tranny is only 145lbs... but awkward as hell. I tried a combo of using a jack and guiding it in place in my home garage. However, I found no success until I just got under it myself and lifted/pressed it in.

Sure, I could rep 405 lbs in my youth... if I tried that now, most of me would probably shoot out my ***...

I had the car up really high on the stands wile I was taking everything apart, but I lowered it down a little because I found it easier to lift the tranny in and out with the car a little lower. I probably had the car about 3.5-4 feet off the ground while taking everything apart and I lowered it down to about 2.5 feet to take the tranny out and put it back in. I was able to hold it for a couple minutes by proping the back of it up on the subframe. It was a pain to get it back on the splines the first time, but the second time it was a piece of cake. I suggest to anyone trying this that you do not support the motor and let it hang off the passenger side mount. This makes it much easier to put the tranny back on the splines, then once you get the tranny back on the splines you can slowly jack up the motor and tranny until you can reinstall the drivers side mount.

LOL.. dang, the EVO tranny almost weighs as much as me! hehe.. I've watched Tom Stangl (aka Mr. VFAQ) install a DSM tranny benching it in and using his legs. It was literally 15 seconds from the time I rolled the tranny onto his chest til it was in the car ready to have the bolts threaded in.

I am far from a spring chicken. I think you are totally right about just getting under there and pressing it up there. I only used the jack to support it once it was placed back on the splines. The key is lowering the motor enough to get the tranny in easily.

P.S. I wish I could rep 405.
