Cams and CELS?

I have a few questions in regard to cam issues.

First, how common is it to get a CEL after a cam install(I'n planning on getting the 272/264 combo)? How hard is it to tune the CEL out through ecu reflash? And, what exactly causes the CEL in the first place? I've read it is often caused by an excessively lean condition, are there any other factors?

I'm curious because I live in a state which test emissions via OBD scan , and I would rather not have to change out the cams every year.
Thanks for the help!

I have HKS 264/264 without any CEL problems. I haven't heard of anyone getting a CEL due to cams if they were flashed for them. The only exception is the P0300 code, but that affects people with stock cams as well.

Thanks. I've read of a few people getting CELs w/272's. Maybe it is just lack of tuning.

The 264/264 setup would probably be least likley to cause a problem, right?

Straight 264's here and no CEL's 20K+ miles.

Why are you considering 272/264 ?

If you get a CEL after cam install then the cams weren't installed right.

I got a cel after my 272/272 installed and tuned w/o cam gears.

But then again it went away after a day by itself.

I was told it's not a concern for those w/ ecu flash. Just more of annoyance.

Probably lumpiness of 272 is the general source of the cel.

I have the problem ever since I got my Exedy Hyper Single clutch installed. I know the P0300 can be thrown from a overly sensitive knock sensor. Some Evos have them, some don't. Unfortunately mine is sensitive. Another reason can be a change in harmonics, which I think is what happened to mine.

Mitsu has a flash for the P0300, but if u have a aftermarket flash already it will erase it. Plus I heard it doesn't really work that good anyways. Hope this helps.
