Actually the only engine that had problems with crankwalk were the 7-bolt 4G63's.The Evo has the 6-bolt 4G63 in it from the 1st generation DSM's.(eclipse/laser/talon)

Yeah, and that's the 2g Eclipses, not the newest gen to clarify. I've read that the problem has been exagerrated and I've read that the problem is widespread. Try running a search for crankwalk and I'm sure you'll find plenty. Then try on a DSM forum or a normal search engine. You'll be reading for months.

Actually the EVO has a 7 bolt motor like the 1995-1999 Eclipse with some changes to compression (8.8.1) instead of 8.5.1 and various other improvements. As far as I can tell though the EVO motor has never been prone to crankwalk. Unlike my 1997 Eclipse GSX with my crank tapping my driver window as I am on the freeway!

I really don't want to argue, but the engine came from the first gen eclipse/laser/talon.It says so in the article above.

I can also get another article that says it also.

As seen here:

Actually, the Evo IV+ engine is the 8 bolt 4G63. These are the engines that are flipped 180 degrees from the earlier 4G63s.

Crankwalk is not nearly as common as people make it sound, but it is something you should check for when buying a 2nd gen 7 bolt DSM (95-99).

Someone I know who works at a local Mitsu dealership says the corporate theory on the source of the problems is maladjusted clutches from the factory. Hopefully this won't be a major problem with the Evo VIII.

Actually, gentlemen, I think it is a ten bolt crank, now. I'll have to wait until I get my EVO8 walkaround tape back to confirm that though.

They did say 10 bolt in the video ... just got done watching it tonight. The video may be wrong though.

In typical DSM speak, we call the style of the 4G63 motor by the number of the bolts that hold the flywheel to the crankshaft.

On the earlier 88-92 production run of the 4G63 motors, they had 6 bolts. This crank was stronger, the bearing journals were wider, the rods were thicker and all was good. The motors were designed in the Group B rally era of no restrictors.

On the motors from 93 through today, they have 7 bolts holding the flywheel to the crank. These cranks are all the same design being lighter, smaller bearing journals, smaller lighter rods with a larger wrist pin diameter. The main bearings have the same 10 bolts as the earlier motor holding on the 5 main bearing caps, but there is a big one piece cradle trying to better stabilize the bottom of the motor better. I say "trying" because it is these 7 bolt motors that are much more likely to have the thrust bearings fail (crankwalk). This motor was designed with an eye towards turbo restrictors and Group A rallying with a working HP level of around 400 hp. So they made it a much better 400 HP motor by taking a lot of weight out of it. The Big Power DSM guys are always using the earlier 6 bolt motors for having fun.

EVO motors are "7 Bolt motors" in DSM speak. If you were talking to push rod motor guy, they may call it a 10 bolt motor because they see 10 bolts holding the crank into the block. That isnt what we are counting.

So Mike, is all this talk about an 8 bolt flywheel on the Evo just nonsense then? Darn misinformation >

I have your license plate holder, btw
