This is an interesting topic... If you have an 03 the only thing needed would be the 10.5T? Would a used 05 turbo do the same? I have seen the whole thing off an 05 for around $300. Is the 10.5t actually worth it? Is it a noticable gain? Right now i peak at 22 and drop to 19-20 with the 10.5T what would be the difference?

From reading David Buschurs Posts, I Have decided that the best way to optimize stock turbo is to port match exhaust manifold, o2 housing and turbine housing . And if you dont already have the 10.5T switch to the 10.5T . This setup alone is what is going to optimize the stock turbo config.

this is only my 2 cents but I feel this route is the best way to optimize without going to alcohol injection .

as with anything I could be wrong

ditto, if you dont have an '05, then a 10.5 hotside with a 02 housing. That will make the stock set up really nice

10.5 hotside... haha, it's a catchy "cool" term that some idiot made up to call the exhaust side of the turbo to confuse people, or help noobs understand the hot new thing to buy. Yeah you can get that. But I suggest getting rid of all restrictions that might limit the flow of your turbo. It's usually from the intake side, and the exhaust side.
/sidenote I wouln't waste my money on a "10.5" hotside, why not just upgrade fuel and buy a better turbo? You'll get way more performance for the money wasted. /end sidenote

Intake side: all IC pipes bigger, a free flowing open element filter
Exhaust side: o2 housing, exhaust

I wouldn't up the boost w/o proper engine management and wideband. Most noobs blow up/screw up their engine this way, even though the fuel maps comes a bit rich from the factory.

If you want more power (after you've done the above), get supporting fuel (fuel pump/fuel pressure reg/injectors) and a wideband then up the boost with proper tuning.
/End thread

I wouldn't call the 10.5 a waste of money. It has made good improvements on many '03 and '04 Evos. I would upgrade the hotside after you have upgraded the exhaust, though.

Regarding the open element filter, put a cone filter on at your own risk. You're better off getting something like a drop in. Try Works new drop in filter. It won't screw with the MAF.

Regarding the question of this thread, this is how I plan on making my stock turbo better. I've sourced a used '05 turbo. I will be putting a ti turbine wheel in it, and have it ported and polished, and have the exhaust housing coated. This is about as good as you're going to get with the stocker. You could try the UK400 turbo, but that will set you back around 3 grand.

I have a 05 MR, so far I am very happy with the stock turbo, mine comes with the 10.5 housing. Anyway, I was wondering the same thing but I already have done a few thing.

I have a set of header from Logic Performance(not installed yet)(you can get them for $239)
I have been waiting for Damn works to release their true 3" o2 housing.

I also called Forced Performance to ask them if they can port and polish my stock turbo plus replacing the stock wheels/shaft for titanium ones.

A Downpipe is a must, a cat back is highly suggested as well.
a MBC will bring your turbo alive
The lower IC pipes seen to help a lot as well, I found two places that makes the pipes with a 2.25 and 2.5" diameter , check AMS and fighter garage. Please go to the search window on this websoite and just put ic pipes and you will find the lower IC pipes, they sell for $145.

Last but not least you can also get the Alcohol injection kit and the upper IC piping. I hope you already have a air filter.

summarizing:

Lower IC pipe
Upper IC pipes
Ported turbo
Polished turbo
MBC
Headers
alcohol Injection
Air filter
Downpipe
Catback

I am getting everything!!! just for the record.

So what turbo can you purchase for $300? 10.5T from Forced Performace is 295.00 , and considering your saying Upgrade the fuel AND buy a better turbo , I dont think 295.00 dollars stretches that far

yeah and I like how you use the word "noobs" so freely and then suggest going to Open Element, and intercooler pipes as better alternative , LMFAO.
