Retaining Torque

What causes the torque on Evo's to fall so rapidly? And how can it be retained so it stays even across the powerband? Thanks.

my understanding is cams help a lot. If you still have the boost taper, getting rid of that would help a LOT. So I guess the answer is, depends on what mods you have right now.

Cams and alky are going in this week.

However even looking at the dyno graphs of similar Evo's their torque is still falling pretty badly.

I'm beginning to think it's just the turbo, watching the torque curve correlates exactly to how our "smaller" turbo feels, it spools hardcore but then kind of falls on its face up top, like any small turbo does, and thats exactly what the torque curve looks like.

well thats true too. But you're going to find it's true in nearly every engine. Ideally of course we would have near constant torque from idle to redline, but its very difficult to get anything close to that. In the case of the stock turbo, the turbo is engineered for midrange, so opening up the exhaust side would likely give you the most top end, but still the compressor has a tough time keeping up. Maybe have a look at larger turbo set ups and see if you can find something that looks to your liking. The WR looks very appealing...

I guess I'm used to Hondas, little to no torque, but it feels like it pulls harder and harder as you near redline, and not vice versa.

i have a long background in them as well, variable valve/cam/lift timing definately aids in that of course. I'll gladly take the trade off of better midrange torque and ... AWD

You think it pulls now. Wait till the Cams, Alky, and tunning are done. Those mods will yield a Huge difference in torque .

its not the amount of torque he's concerned with, its the spread of it over a small area thats unlike a honda where there is less, but over a very broad range.

au.... it's good that we don't have much torque up top. it could break things.

that and the afr runs a bit rich after the boost kicks in.
