Hello,

The very first post on this thread by SuperHatch back in 2005 contained a really good PDF of the Gearbox and Transfer box from what is I believe an EVO1,2 or 3. (see attachment)

10 years is a long time so I don't know if SuperHatch is still a memeber but I'm sure some of you guys can put me right.

Sadly I am not an Evo owner but I am hoping to use the running gear from one to build a hillclimb car. Don't worry I won't be cannibalising a decent car, only a scrappy!

I have exchanged a couple of emails with a guy in Australia who has use EVO running gear in a mid engine, 4wheel drive configuration. In the standard car the engine overhangs at the front so if you shift it all back to mid engine then as you can see from the diagram the driveshafts (now driving rear wheels)are now behind the engine so great weight distribution but oh dear the central output shaft is pointing the wrong direction.

My aussie acquaintance tells me he has modified the casing and output shaft to make it point forwards but he hasn't given me too much info so this is why I'm tapping up you guys.

There is really just a couple of things I would like to check:

1. I want to make sure I'm looking at the right thing. Is the diagram of an EVO 1,2,or 3 as this is the model range he tells me he has modified. He describes it as "the right angled shaft" type transfer box.

2. The diagram shows the box in plan view. I can see where the bell housing would join on to the gearbox. For the central output shaft to point the other direction it would have to pass below the engine. Ignoring all the complexities of actually engineering this, does the transfer box sit low enough to do this in the first place?

3. Does it sound as hard to you as it does to me!! The australian guy, Glen (he has a name) says he did it all in his home garage.

Any guidance appreciated.

That diagram is for an evo7-9, as the transfer case has the ACD stuff shown.

Anyone know what the tiny hole sealed with an o-ring between the transfer and transmission is for?
