The past couple days I have heard a grinding noise that I have been trying to figure out what it is. It isn't a consistant noise, I only tend to hear it from the front end when the car is hot and I'm coming down from about 45+ mph down to a slow roll. I hear it brakes on and clutch in. I have only heard it a handful of times, it goes away as quickly as it shows up.
I found out after I bought the car that the dealer had rebuilt the trany on it and have never trusted their work. Where should I look for the trouble? I'm wondering if somehow the trany oil could be lower than it should be, sometimes the shifter can be balky. I have been trying to find the time to change it or get it changed. Otherwise the car seems ok.

They told me that it isn't under W, the OO messed it up. If I knew that I wouldn't have touched the car with a ten meter cattle prod. The other dealership I have had do work on the car hasn't figured that out yet, I may have them look at the car.
I'd like to know if it could be bearings (I doubt that), the differential, or is it new trany time (I hope not). I have heard other complaints about similar noises.
The Evo has the most flimsy trany I have yet seen. I put my 5.0 Mustang through 10 times the abuse for 130,000 miles on the factory clutch with zero problems.

The tranny on the EVO is very beefy for an AWD tranny. Unlike a Mustang drivetrain, where the rear wheels can break free while launching, the tires on an AWD don't breakfree unless you have a lot of power. So when you launch, the EVO tranny and gears take all the shock of trying to launch an AWD drivetrain. If there is anything that is relatively weak, it is the synchros but then the sychros are much stronger compared to regular manual transmissions out there (triple cone 1st-2nd, double cone for the rest, I think) ... except for transfer cases failing (shimmed improperly in the factory), synchros wearing out and axles breaking, I have yet to hear about stripped gears ...

More time with the problem (that seems to be showing up more regularly) makes me think that it is something up with the brakes. It's not the squeelers sound that I think I'm hearing. It sounds like something could be caught in the pads. It's a deeper noise, very much a grinding noise. I probably need to get it checked out, by a mechanic or dealer. I'm not too trusting of the dealers.
I got it used, and didn't learn about it's early trany problems until I took it to the dealership the car came from and had the rebuild at. The shifter can be balky when cold, 4-5th gear grinds under load. Another dealer that has done work on the car hasn't breathed a word about it. I need to get the trany oil replaced, is that something I should try to do or get it done?
Thanks for the helpl.

The noise is becoming more regular now. I'm probably going to have to take it in to get it worked on tomorrow morning. Is a warped rotor covered under W?
It is possible it is some sort of bearing noise, tho it spikes when the brakes are on. Are the Evo's bearings replaceable, or are they the pressed in sort?

At first it seemed only clutch in. Now the noise is constant, rolling in N with cluch out. Doesn't seem to matter. I'm going to take it in this morning, it's getting too bad. Is a warped rotor covered under W?
I guess I'm going to find out the hard way.
