2nd Gear Synchro Problem
Update,
The transmission is being rebuilt as I write this by a local race shop. I was able to see the broken component. What broke were the 4 metal tangs that engage the 2nd gear and are part of the synchro. All 4 sheared right off, but were held captive in the 2nd gear female receptor so that they didn't do damage to the rest of the gear box. I will post the pictures later.
It was amazing the amount of wear on all the synchros at even 20,000 miles. And, believe it or not, I don't drive it too hard. I only autocross occasionally. I don't drag, and don't drive agressively on the road.

Here are some pictures I took yesterday. I got the car back today, and so far everything is great.
First picture is of the car with everything apart. It hurt to see the car like this.
Second picture shows a new synchro on the left and the bad one on the right. Notice the 4 tabs on the new one that are missing on the right. It seems odd that this would be the weak point of a synchro. Can anyone else verify if this has been a problem in the past? These tabs fit into the 2nd gear to tie it to the gear.

I think the bill will be around 1400 including the clutch install, parts and labor. The mechanic upgraded all the synchros to the latest versions (the 03 synchros have been replaced by the 04's).
Yeah, it grinded at anything over 4000 RPM's for shifting. Even below that I had to be smooth about it. Most the time I either launched in 2nd or did a 1st to 3rd shift.
