marks on oil dipstick

How much oil does it take to move the oil level from bottom mark on the stick to top?

I think I posted the same question a while back. Seriously. I will tell you that's it's not a whole lot. Our dipsticks are funny too. One day it could be at the top, the next at the middle, then back at the top. All while cold or hot or whatever.

it depends on alot of things. Are you parked on a level surface, how long did the car cool down? Temp outside if the car was sitting for a while. Understand that a little bit of oil gets held up in all the little passages of the motor. so at any given time ,you may have a quart or more circulating thru the motor. So if you check it while its running you might read low. If your parked on a flat surface, you may get some oil thats just sitting up in the head, if your parked on an incline gravity makes that oil go back down to the pan. Like I said, Alot of variables. I have a custom oil cooler in my car, and stainless hoses, the oil cooler is mounted in the front of the radiator, the cooler itself and the hoses hold more then a quart so I run about 5 1/2 to 6 quarts in my car because I dont want to starve the pump for oil, because at any given time, between the motor and the lines and cooler there is about 2 1/2 quarts in circulation which only leaves 2 in the pan.
