Oil overfilled...

It seems that Mitsubishi overfilled many of our cars from the factory. I just changed my oil and when I put in my 5 quarts of Mobil 1, it is still over the full mark. Should I drain some of the oil off?

u all may think this is useless, but its good to acutally make ur first oil change on like 1000km (600miles)? first oil change only, and then the regular changes would be every 4000km.

the first change is supposed like to clean out ur engine after u break it in, and all the residue rinses out.

You never get all the oil out of the engine when you drain it. There are the oil galleys in the engine, the oil cooler, oil coating the inside of the engine, etc...

So don't just put in 5 quarts and be done with it. Put in 4 quarts. Then wait for a bit. Check the oil level. Then put in some more if you haven't reached the full mark on the dipstick.

Mine came overfilled also. Should I replace the oil filter to get a little oil out? I dont think I can pull the drain plug for a second and put it back in, and I dont want to change the oil already at 50 miles!!!~~!

You can pull off the filter and drain it then put it back on, do this a few times and start the car in between to fill the filter up again.

It's always best to drain an overfilled engine.

Depending on engine design a high oil level can cause all kinds of problems like increased internal crankcase pressure which may blow oil seals. Increased cankshaft drag resulting in reduced power etc.

Having too much oil in the crankcase can cause the oil to foam, especially if it is so full that the cranshaft is spinning in the oil. As for taking off the filter to remove excess oil, I don't think that is a good idea because then the motor runs for about one second with no oil pressure. When I do my oil changes I always fill the filter with oil to make the oil pressure come up as soon as possible...

Well, my car also came overfilled (just a little over the top notch). I assume this is to compensate for the oil consumed during break in (since they can't count on owners religiously checking their oil... like you should). The small amount mine is overfilled is a non issue (not enough to foam, etc). Also, FWIW, my car doesn't appear to have used a drop yet. But I just put 600 miles on it, so we will see how it does w/some higher rpm, heavier throttle driving.

In contrast to what the manual says, the engine should really not eat up any oil during the breakin, or ever, unless it has some blown rings, and or other seals.

Im going to check my level tonight when I go home (COLD oil level) I know last time I checked it, the engine was hot, and all the oil may have expanded or something to show a high reading...

Factory Oil Level is 1/4 inch above top notch. No oil loss noticed. I have checked mine 3 times over the last two weeks. 750 miles now.

I just drained my oil to exactly the top notch. 1/8 quart or 150ml came out. I do not think that will be a big deal.

Sorry to drag up a very old thread. How much over is too much? like how far over the full line will the oil start to foam? and how much does heated oil change the oil level when it is checked?

I ask because I was barely at "good" on the dipstick (engine was cold) so I filled it till it was about 1/16th from full, I just checked it and it's about 1/8th over filled

I would like some more answers on this also. I checked mine today after about 5 minutes of cool down (5 mins after engine off) and mine was a bit high.

Are you supposed to check oil when the engine is warmed up or cold?

How close to perfectly level does the ground the car is sitting on have to be?

How much over the max line is too much?

Is it necessary to drain the oil cooler also?

When I changed the oil, I put in five quarts. Based on the specs in the owner's manual, I should be using just over five quarts for the engine + filter.
