cams and gas mileage - share experiences

I wanted to know how everyone did with there cams.. 262/272/280 etc. and How they did with gas mileage after having them..

It seems my car eats so much more gas after my cams... I'm getting somewhere around 150 miles a tank boosting at 21 psi with occassional sprited driving.

Anyone else?

I know alot of people have said they get better gas mileage with cams installed but I was wondering why I'm not.. I did get tuned and was running 11.2 a/f ratio.

my gas mileage improved 2-4 mpg on the highway after installing cams. I have gone as high as 29mpg with the cams in. I usually average 24 or so.

im running a closed loop tune w/ aem ems.

try using highest octane possible and putting more air in your tires. and lighten your car from junk.

My gas milage stayed about the same after I got 264 cams installed, maybe a slight increase of 1-2mpg.

Perhaps it's your right foot that's causing the problem.

its the 4wd eating the gas. It's hard to get around it.

With 264/272's if I stayed out of boost it was not to bad, but when I got into it it seemed I got gallons per mile.

Your probably right... thats one factor another is the AWD eating my gas.

I did get ECU flashed after my cams installation however my idle is still like crap.. I know and I don't want to believe it but I'm running my BOV vented and I know it's not good I just don't have the time and money right at the moment to get rid of it because its the HKS ssq v. 2 with the upper IC pipe and I threw out the old stock upper IC... because it was just a rubber and I never intended on putting it back in.

I'll have to buy another aftermarket upper IC pipe and then grab myself another BOV to recirculate it... That will probably help big time.

The reason I don't want to believe it was before the cam install I had the BOV vented and it caused absolutely no problems.. no drivability problems, no stalling, no idling.. my car was running perfect besides possibly a little rich during shifts.

I think the addition of the cams and the BOV being vented is causing hell for my car.. anyways I'm getting off topic with the gas mileage thing.

Thanks for all your reply's.. I just wanted to see how the rest of you were running.

really... wow.. that's interesting.. I know royal purple is one of the best synthetic oils.

I'll def. try that.. but I might wait until my maintanence warranty is expired before I start paying for oil

Besides... its the only warranty I have left

I'm using HKS 280s with an aggressive setting that enhances midrange torque, which increases efficiency in the rpm range where the engine hovers at 75-80mph.

My best experience so far has been 375miles on a tank, not hitting the reserve light until 335 miles.

ev08buoy, why don't you just buy the 20 dollar recirculation kit for the hks?
