Over-Revved

Tonite, while I was crusing on a Highway with 5th gear in, I had to downshift to 4th gear due to traffic. Then, when I saw a open road, I accidently shifted into 3 gear instead of 5th gear causing rpm to reach 8-9k rpm mark. In a split second, I shifted back to 5th gear, but now I worry that my new evo 9 might have a problem. The car seems working fine after that incident but I think engine makes more noise than before unfortunate event.

Any thoughts on how to check a potential problem?

Is brand new. If the noise continues in the next day or two, take it in to the dealer and have them check it for you. Don't mention the down shift and over rev.

Bent valves. blown headgasket. possible turbo issues. dunno if the Evo's 4g63 is an interference design or not maybe some of the other members could enlighten us.

a compression test and leak down test should show you any issues with the engine. I'm a little new to turbo's myself so not sure on how you would test that component.

Doesnt the evo have a rev limiter? I agree its not good for the engine though, especially on a new car.. Iam curious though what are you keeping your RPMs at? Iam guessing youre under 1500 miles so shouldnt your RPMs be kept very low?

To my understanding, 5k rev limiter only kicks in while standing still. I drove my car w/o spooling turbo for 500 miles. Then this incident happens. I will see how car drives tomorrow. Hopefully, nothing serious happened to my lovely evo9

The rev limiter is limiting your throttle response while accelerating up in a gear, not rolling at hight speed shifting into too low a gear. The car will over rev, nothing the limiter can do about that.

Just be careful, one time won't cause problems hopefully but if you keep doing it, problems will occur.
