Big problem

Ok I've done a search on this rpm raising issue, and it doesn't seem that anyone else's problem relates to mine. Here's my issue: During normal driving, 1st and 2nd gear feel fine. But when I gently shift into third around 3500, let the rpms drop to about 3k, and put the throttle down about 3/4 of the way, the rpms will shoot up to about 4K-4200, drop off about 500 rpms, and then the car will start to accelerate normally. WTF? This happens in 4th gear also. It just started happening a couple of days ago but I thought maybe I had the clutch slightly depressed on accident while I was in 4th gear. So on the way to work this morning I noticed the same thing and got pissed. I then tried it in 3rd gear and got the same thing. WTF? Do I have to take this dang thing to the dealer already? It's only been 3 months.

When you experience this, is the transmission already in 3rd gear? If so, it sounds like the clutch may be going out. What confuses me is that it only happens in 3rd and 4th, and not 1st-2nd. I would guess if it was the clutch, it would happen in any gear.

Yea it's already in 3rd gear and the clutch is fully engaged. I didn't really have enough time to fully test 1st and 2nd gear, but it didn't seem to be happening there.

I don't think it's the clutch because doing about 60mph I'll slowly downshift to 4th, fully release the clutch and stay off the gas until the rpm's drop to about 3k or 3200, and put it to the floor and it does the same thing. I kinda exaggerated a bit though. The rpms go up about 500, drop down about 200, and then accelartes like normal. Could it be a boost problem?

Actually, the clutch going out is noticeable first in the higher gears, I assume due to more load. When my stocker went out I could pull hard in 1-3 but flooring it in 4-5 caused it to slip. Af course it quickly spread to all gears, but it starts high and works down through the workload...

What does a clutch feel like when it slips? I've had stickshift cars before but I've never experienced a cluth going out.

Also, if the clutch is going out, then you can let off the gas and clutch, wait, and then floor it and it _will_ slip. If you were up here in NoVA I could drive it and tell you right away if that's the problem. You ought to see if there's someone in your area who can drive it and help you tell if that's the problem...

oh, ok. Well I added you to my buddy list from DCEvo (I'm Pure Evo). As long as you're not modded, I'd think about having the dealer look at it. If it isn't the clutch, it may be the synchros or something like that, or the pedal may just need to be adjusted. It's kind of hard to diagnose over the computer. Good luck.

But can someone explain what it feels like when a clutch is slipping? I think I have an idea but I'm not sure.

with a slipping clutch, your rpms will raise but your speed won't as quickly. put it in 1st give it a liitel gas, go to 2nd, then in 3rd around 3k rpms, gun it and watch the tach and speedo.
