IS there a major difference between the turbos from 05 Evo 8 and Evo 9?
Or are these baseline gains simply from the improved ECU and MIVEC?

Thanks,

Yes there is a major difference. Compressor housing is now bigger.

ECU & MIVEC help as well.

05 models have a 10.5cm hot side compared to the 03/04 models 9.8cm hotside.

Compressor side is the same from 03-05.

So Shiv,

Did you guys ever smog test the car after the exhaust went in?

there are ways to test knock reaction like useing a bracket to mount a motor near the sensor that has a small weight that rattles against the block. and watch what the maps do

Sorry bout that. I just got back from LA today (with a brand new Mazdaspeed 6 to play with no less ). Just give the office a call to set-up an appointment. Looking forward to meeting ya...

Yeah...if you look at it as an EVO alternative, it's not really fair. It's designed to be a GT, much like a Legacy GT or Audi S4. Viewed in that context, it's really quite nice. I was cruising home from LA last night at some godawful (fast) average speed without ever realizing it. It was fun!

Shiv,

Are you saying that you're able to play with the MS6's engine maps?

I'm asking because I haven't heard of anybody yet who is offering ECU-tuning for this car.

Mazda gave it to us yesterday so I haven't don't much with it other than haul *** back to northern California. Their only directive was "play around with it" and "make more horsepower." Along the same lines of what we did for the Mazdaspeed Miata a few months back and what we're doing with a Mazdaspeed Protege right now. The car does present a number of challenges (1500psi fuel pressure/direct injection, throttle by wire that closes the throttle as revs rise, etc,.) It may be take a few weeks to sort out. Or it may take a year. Too early to tell at this point. But it's a fun car to drive. Not EVO kind of fun. But fun in its own right.

Shiv
