bad front diff Q
bad front diff Q
My friend thinks he might have a bad front diff or that his transfer case is going bad. What are some signs of this happening? How do you know for sure if its bad?
It will be whining really bad. Mine would be ear piercing and like a set speed (55mph). I don't think you can check it youself. Send it to sheperd or tre and get a lsd if you have to fix it anyway then it will help stop it from happening again.
Jack the front end of your car so that your wheels are off of the ground rotate roll either wheel forward or backward and the other wheel should freely roll in the opposite direction as the one you are rolling with no problem. If that works your front diff is ok, I dont know how to check the center diff though
If you need a front diff I have a mint one for sale. PM me

A whining transfer case is not the signs of a bad diff, but rather of a bad ring and pinion set. If the R&P gears are whining then it is most likely due to bad fluid, low fluid, incorrect fluid, or misaligned gears from the factory that caused accelerated gear wear.
A bad front diff, as stated above, will show its signs in turns from a popping, cracking, sound. When driving in a straight line the spider gears are not turning at all, so there will be no noise generated by the damaged gearset. If you jack up the car and turn one of the front wheels and the other doesn't move the other way, or if it's impossible to turn the wheels, those are pretty definate signs.

If you have an question on whether the replacement fluid you get is hypoid compatible just stick with
if it's at low speed also check your rear diff... if you don't have the proper firtcion modifyers in the fluid you will get audible and feelable vibrations. i also have a front diff for sale :]
