Bad banging/knocking from my engine

I am getting a wickedly loud tapping coming from the head now.

I have an '03 GSR with the following:
  1. Intake
  2. exhaust
  3. fuel pump
  4. dynoflash

About a week ago I had a very slight ticking at ~10% throttle in all gears. I have been really busy at work so I haven't had time to really look into it. Fastforward to last night and on my way home from work the ticking turned into a loud tapping/knocking after a WOT pass on a semi. My SES came back on and the car was doing the "P0300 shudder".

This morning I changed the oil and inspected the filter/drain plug to see if there were any metal shavings present and there were none (I'm not going to pull the oil pan until I really have to). I fired her back up after buttoning everything up and the tapping is not as loud but is still present and it ain't quiet.

I have never taken the head off of the engine and I have never even had the valve cover off.

OK here's the deal after really doing an inspection for my tapping noise:
  1. At idle the engine makes the classic 4G63 noises
  2. when revving up to 1700 RPM the engine is still making the same noises it did brand new
  3. at 1800 RPM exactly (everytime) the loud knock starts
  4. after 1900 RPM it goes away and then makes the classic 4G63 noises again

I am perplexed at why it would only make noise at a 100 RPM interval. The noise seems to be coming from the intake side of the engine (and it's damn loud!) Everything that I have read during my searches suggest that lash adjusters will be a consistant noise and increase volume/intensity with RPM. That is obviously not the case with my Evo.

Would a bad lifter be causing such a precise noise range?

FYI - I have a spun bearing. It was number 1 that was spun all to hell

I you hear anything like I described above, DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR!!! GO DIRECTLY TO A SHOP!!!

If you continue to drive you will kill your block and that will be an additional $1600.

I also have a ticking sound on idle. When I just cold star the car it doesnt have that sound but when it gets warm the ticking sound starts. But when I rev the engine to about 1500 and up the sound is gone. Do you think I have the same problem as yours?

I would suggest taking the car to a shop/dealer to have them take a closer look. You may be able to save your crank and just replace the rods.

Do you have cams? The cams will tick when the car is idle or cold. My cams didn't tick for the first 6 months I got them installed, and now they tick like a ****... but it's definitely not loud enough to hear from inside the car, nor is it loud enough to be classified as knocking/tapping. If it is, then I'd worry.

Well, yes I have the hks 264/272 cams. The sound started weeks after I installed my Cams and Downpipe. The sound is not that loud, is just like a light ticking sound...

Depending on who you talk to, that would be considered a "normal" sound. I do believe the sound occurs if you do not bleed your lifters correctly when installing the cams...
