Tapping/knocking nosie at idle
Tapping/knocking nosie at idle
I just noticed a pretty loud tapping/knocking noise coming from what seems to be the head or timing belt area on start up. The noise is pretty consistent at idle when the car is warming up but once the car is given gas the noise goes away. I slowly revved the car and there was no sign of any tapping or increase in noise with rpm's. Once its revved the noise isn't there at idle anymore. Just wondering if anyone has a similar problem? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

thats one thing that i was thinking, its more of like a harmonic rattling/tapping. Its deffinately coming from the top of the motor though seems to be by the timing belt area. Its just weird because after one rev of the motor the noise completely gone. Could it possibly a tensioner or pulley?

wouldn't hurt to check the crank pulley though. hope its something minor and you get it taken care of.
Im running mobile 1, 10w 30 oil and the car has stock cams. And yeah im hoping its something minor too. I doubt its an exhaust leak because it sounds like its coming from around the timing belt side of the head. The noise only started recently and happens when cars been sitting for awhile. If i turn the car back on after its been warmed up theres no noise. Only on cold start it'll make the nosie until i give it gas and then its completely gone until the next cold start. Lifter taps usually follow the rpm rise and get louder this noise just goes away. Has me puzzled.
Mine kinda does the same thing... with the kiggly HLA until I get into boost a bit the lifters start ticking at around 3000rpm... and yes I am letting the car warm up before I drive it...

so your car is making the noise while driving? Its hard to figure out where mine is coming from because it only happens at idle on cold start up, once its revved the noise cant be heard and goes away after that.
i may try a different oil weight, the reason ive been using 10w 30 is because of the mileage on the car. But anyone have any other input? Wondering if the noise could be weather related. It only started a couple days ago and the weather here has been terrible its been raining almost everyday for 2 weeks. The car never had this noise before.
Yes, once it is revved it goes away, which points straight to the lifters... I am running 20-50, so I assume that has something ot do with mine...
Im definately going to look into it tomorrow and try to pinpoint where its coming from. Im still hesitant on it being a lifter and leaning more towards a timing belt component or something being loose. Only reason is because its sounds more of a rattle or clank noise then tapping after listening to it more closely.
