To the best that can be ascertained from observations here and in the real world, it makes sense to go standalone when either:

(1) The factory MAF cannot be made to effectively meter the existing airflow;

-or-

(2) The additional logging capabilities prove to be worth the cost.

Until or unless either of those conditions are met, it's an optional expense.
You implied that a MAF system will out perform a MAP based system on a street driven car. Driveability is most certainly a part of a vehicles performance.

There are a lot more factors involved when making a decision to go stand alone than the two you mention. I feel another thread should be started to discuss this.

If you are inexperienced with stand alones it will take a lot of time and you may have to retune.
For a few years, I was the biggest Electromotive dealer in the US, spending an average of 20-30hrs a weel mapping them and other sytems in a wide range of cars (twin turbo Camaros to Renault rally cars). In fact, our first commercially available products were stand alone ecu packages for turbo Miatas and Subarus. It wasnt' until 2002 that we shifted our efforts away from them and towards things which a better suited for public consumption. YMMV, of course.

Superior driveability, efficiency, emissions, and adaptability over the long term are why the vast majority of new vehicles sold today is run by a MAF system, despite the fact that it is more costly.
