Off throttle grinding\vibe

Friday night I noticed that when I lift off the throttle when rolling I hear a mild grind\vibe coming from the drivetrain. It does it at pretty much all speeds. If I push in the clutch and then lift, it does not happen. Happens only on decel. Not heard during acceleration.

Let a DSM friend of mine drive it and he's thinking a throw out bearing. I was thinking bigger, Tranny or transfer or clutch. Can't rule out diffs yet I suppose.

My 03 has 33,000 miles on the stock clutch, no slipping but have smelled it on several occasions. Changed fluids at 30k, synchro mesh in tranny, Mitsu lube in transfer\rear diff. Mods to 300\305 tq. Minimal launching, daily driver.

Any ideas to help narrow this down?

Thanks guys,

Coming from a mitsu tech, cool. Any telltale signs I can look for or just take it to the dealership? I was kinda hoping for a throw out bearing. Replaced under warranty.

(Uh, while your there, can you swap out my clutch for this shinny new ACT.)

Sounds like throw-out bearing, but mine did almost the same thing and it ended up being a rod bearing

Took the car in today, they said it is the front diff. And, my drivetrain and emissions warranty is voided. Oh well, I was just ok'ed for new front calipers and a new rear wing under warranty. Also had my seat back replaced. My car does have 33,600 miles on it, only 2,400 miles left on the warranty any way. Still on the stock clutch. So with the money I have saved buying used parts from my brothers here on the site and not having paid the dealership anything thus far for anything but oil filters. I'll just say I'm blessed and not cry about them fixing my car this time...... Anybody got a used TRE front dif layin around? Let me know.

Thank you for your support,
evojon

I had this problem straight after I changed my clutch. Annoyed the crap out of me. That was a while ago (about 15,000 miles) At the time I was told it was the after market clutch. Since I just paid $1200 for a very heavy organic exedy to be fitted, I wrote it off as one of those "performance/comfort compromises"

Recently, I took my car dragging, and really did some wear on the clutch... The clutch is a lot more worn now - the grab point is higher... But the sound is gone.

I'm wondering now if the aftermarket clutches are too thick or something from the factory, and need a significant wear in period to avoid the noise. That said, if I can notice the grab point being higher - the clutch must nearly be gone.

I know the dealer said it was front diff, but one opinion doesn't make it right... Did yuo by chance change your clutch recently?

EDIT: My bad, didn't really read your first post in detail. Sorry

Just a little off topic, I have similar issues and noises.

I recently changed my DP, and noticed a different pattern to this noise/vibration under decel then with the previous DP. I have kartboy exhaust hangers (much stiffer than stock) so I suspect that's part of the issue here.

Update, changed t-case oil last Sunday, not metal on drain plug magnent or metal of any sort in fluid. Oil was dark but not bad, only changed it about 6,000 miles ago. Used Diaqueen again. Wanted to check out the tranny oil next. Maybe tomorrow, maybe next weekend, Superbowl ya know. Anyhow the sound is not getting noticably louder.

chrisw, I have the Vishnu sig TB that has rattled since install, I'll fix it some day. Have a Kartboy bushing on one side but have to drop the dp to put on the other side. Need to drop the dp, bend on the mounts abit, maybe wrap the dp too. That should quiet it.

This new noise is def drive train. I'm back to thinkin throw out but we will see when I drain the tranny fluid.

I dunno, but I hope your clutch is not nearly gone. Lets say seated or broke in. Did you get under the steering wheel and adjust the take up on the pedal yet. That may be the ticket for ya.

Off topic: I'm an electrician and about to graduate from medical diagnostic ultrasound school. Love evos, beer and Australian women (I think), do you guess I could make a living down there? Just in case I wanted to runaway that is.
