To Sequential or not

A friend is installing an Ikeya Formula Sequen shifter (Japanese made) in his 350 z.
He showed me video clips on how it works. Its not 100% sequential because u have to use the clutch. However, shifts are quicker. Ikeya manufactures the same product for EVO's.

Does anyone use this product?
Does it make shifting quicker?
Is it reliable?
Can u use it for daily driving?
Is it an expensive & useless Gadget?
Are there better products?
Is it recommended for my Evo ix?
Appreciate your feedback.

there are sequentiol gear boxes for the evo.

and i'll ask you a few questions to answer your questions.

does it make shifting quicker? can you commit to every shift? cuz if you can then yes... they're faster... but do you skip downshifts? because you can't do that in a seq.

it's reliable as long as you don't pussyfoot it... if you change your mind in teh middle of the shift your gears go cckkkkrrr

you can use it daily... but once again... no pussyfooting

is it expensive... how much you make a year? hahahaha it has it's uses... are you gonna use it? that's the question.

So u can't click it twice with your foot on the clutch to drop from fourth to second.

You can't change your mind if your down to third and want to go back to fourth (clutch depressed of course).

It seems like a nice option especially for ocassional track days.

I agree with Isal. I have a sequential shifter in my Evo but I also have a dog box. I wouldn't want the sequential shifter on a standard tranny.

Do a google search under "dog box or dog gear" and you'll find all kinds of info.

he means dog engagement gears. truthfully, all transmissions have dog engagement gears, it's just that somewhere along the line dog engagement became different from synchromesh, even though synchromesh gears have dog engagement teeth on them.

long story short. there are two sets of teeth on the gears in your tranny. one is the mesh gears, these can be straight cut or helical cut.

the second set of teeth is perpendicular to the first set which are radial, these are the dog engagement gears.

in a dog box you typically lack the synchromesh rings which usually reside radially INSIDE the aforementioned helical gears. this acts as a small clutch and allows both shafts to come to the same speed before the dog gears "bite".

that said, in a dog box it's usually REQUIRED to have a pnumatic sequential shifter, one that SHOOTS the dog gears (teeth) into each other so you don't get an inconsistent grindy shift.

now... what is being misunderstood is this. a SEQUENTIAL SHIFTING 'GEAR'BOX is merely the shifter box, the part that holds the shift cables, the thing that moves the shift forks around. THIS has two common systems... the cable style you see in most cars and a barrel roller style that is known as the sequential. they call it sequential because you can only go up one or down one at a time. this is accomplished by pulling or pushing. during hte pull or push action a barrel inside the shifterbox rolls and in turn actuates the shifter forks. THIS CAN BE USED IN ANY TIME OF TRANSMISSION. where in the case of a dogbox it is additionally mated to a pnumatic actuating system.

the end.

this would be a very sweet item for the evo, mostly at the track.

I had on of these setups on my silvia back in the day. I owned it for a week, So times it would not always go into gear right and it was a pain to get into neutral when aproching a redlight. My was just a unit that mounted to the tranny and changed the shift patern to a streight line.

Depends on the dogbox and the rules for the racing series. I've been running one in my mazda which has a normal H-pattern shifter. Rules for rally specifically disallow true sequential gearboxes like the ones used in WRC.

That said, the quicker you are on the gearbox during shifts, the better the result. You absolutely should not slow-shift a dogbox.
