Erratic Idle

For the past 8 months or so since the cams have been in I've had an issue with an erratic idle. Id say about 30% of the time I come to a stop the car will purr like a kitten at ~900 rpms with ~14.7 a/f, and 18hq vaccum. Most of the time however the rpms will dip to around 600rpms and slowly come up but the a/f is around 19-20, 12hg vaccum and the lope is much more pronounced. The car never comes close to stalling but feels like its searching. Given that the problem isnt consistent I have no clue what would cause this. Ive gone over all my vaccum tubing for leaks- all joints are zip tied, t-clamps on IC piping, APS DV, GSC 272/264 cams, and a TT custom flash. Any ideas?

thats life with cams, and I like it. Nobody messes with you at stop lights because they can hear it to.
some tuners can get it to idle better with cam gear tuning

??????????????Rod bearings??????????????WTF

He's semi retarded, dont worry about him.

I've got no problems with the lope, im just curious why it isnt either one way or the other 100% of the time.

mine started that when I put larger injectors in (w/ 272's). Some times, it's ok, other times it hunts for idle a bit and or lopes. A/C off, A/C on, hot, cold doesn't seem to affect teh frequency of when it does it.

Im still running the stock injectors, but im sure there is a reason for this. Maybe something I can correct with with the tune in EcuFlash.

Try swaping in the stock bov and see if that helps - also try adjusting the idle speed screw

I have the same cams and my car idle was rough before Al updated my flash, now it's much smoother.

It still has some lope, but I hear the GSC cams are like that. The shop that did my install said they have a hard time getting the GSCs to idle on some cars...

No faults?

A PCV check valve sticking closed time to time might do that

Probably not cams - can make a car stall at normal idle

Sometimes crud can build in the ports of the TB but that will be more consistant and will change when eng is cold or warm

I've had the p0300 if I idle long enough since the cams went it. It comes and goes on it's own depending on how much traffic I drive in.

Right out of the book without hooking up diagnostic equipment, the 0300 misfire imay likely be caused by these:
  1. Ignition system failed
  2. Crankshaft pos sensor
  3. A/F ratio
  4. Compression
  5. timing belt skip
  6. EGR system failed
With my experience, getting a 0300 after WOT driving was directly fixed with new spark plugs and smaller gap (don't know which), but you are getting the fault at idle and it's intermittent so you can probably rule out all of the above except 6.

Does AC compressor cause it?

I have same cams - GSC 272-264 - but my car idled no different in rpm just choppier

Nope, I rarely use the AC. The car is smooth and put down good numbers recently.

I have a similar problem. Sometimes, not all the time, after I pop the car in neutral (while comming to a stop) my idle dips down and nearl stalls. A few times my car actually did stall.

The only mods I have is intake, dp, and cb.

IgottaEVO - it is most likely caused by your intake, BOV or dirty MAF. Check for leaks in your IC piping.

fsu - I've had a similar experience with HKS 280 cams. I ended up using ECUflash to bump up the idle target RPM values (there are several of them) and it hasn't stalled or idled too low since. Download the software (it's free) and take a look at the parameters.

BTW - which clutch to you have?
