Timing belt.

hello all, i was wondering if i can get my timing belt replaced after 65,000 miles. i know that you need to get it done by it hits 60,000 miles.

i am running everything stock right now... theres no mods done to my car and i really dont beat on it much since its my only daily driven car.

is it safe to go over the 60,000 miles? let me know.

It really comes down to a judgement call on your part. You know how you drive it, you know what its been through. Timing belts CAN last alot longer than what the recommended mileage if the car is driven conservatively.

I personally would replace it. But thats my car, I know how I drive it.

The problem is that waiting could cost you thousands of dollars in bent valves, head work, etc. in the event that the belt breaks. Not only is it monetary, but after all that work after a broken timing belt, your car may never run correctly again.

IMO, and what I will do when the time comes, is replace the belt at 60k. Not a gamble that I'm willing to take..

DO NOT risk going over on the Evo. Could it make it? Maybe, but is it worth the risk? If the Evo is anything like the DSM's, if you go over 60k it's almost guaranteed to break. I would do it at say maybe 55k to be safe but i am a bit **** when it comes to things like that. Personally i would do the water pump too while i was in there but that's your call. Good luck.

Yes you should replace the tensioner along with the belt. Some opt to change out the tensioner pulley with a new one too but it is up to you.

He prolly would have wasted that same amount of in oxygen cursing at his car otherwise. Timing belts are not fun.

I sure don't know why you didn't change the tensioner. It would simply have been the cost of the part itself. Given the down side of a tensioner failure, it's cheap insurance to do it all, and 65,000 miles is more than enough to spend the extra $100 or less...

I got my timing belt replaced at 65k. The guy who swapped mine for me said he's seen them last over 90k sometimes, and in most cases the ones that he's seen snap before 60k are on older cars that see low mileage per year. I would say it's fairly safe to go over, but you're still risking bent valves if it snaps on ya.

I had a Golf 16v that broke the timing belt and the mechanic said I was one of 10% of cars where the piston did not smack a cylinder. Timing belt is next on my list after I get some new tires.
