JDM Evo 9 Turbo Problems?

Hi, has anyone ever heard of a problem with the Turbo of the JDM Evo 9 ?
Just came back from my tuner and he claimed that most of the JDM Evo 9 had Turbo shaft problems, that it will eventually snap/break even when running with normal boost.
He suggested to buy a USDM turbo. How much does it cost?
Thanks guys

Yes, the JDM turbos which use the magnesium wheel have had some issues at higher boost levels. Your tuner was right to suggest the stock USDM IX turbo, assuming you're after the JDM's power production. The turbo will run in the $700 range, and can be had from a variety of vendors including Blouch Turbo, Forced Performance, Turbochargers.com, and your local Mitsu dealer.

Which Turbo for 400 WHP?

Thanks Pd1.
I'm aiming for 350-400 whp for my JDM EVO 9 on lousy Indonesian fuel here....(suppossingly 95 Octane, but closer to 88 i think). I currently have S-AFC II, OS Giken twin plate clutch, Advan 048 tyres, Greedy Boost controller (i run it lo on 14.7 psi and hi at 21 psi), K&N Filter Element, Defi boost and egt meters, pivot shift light and turbo timer.

Should I just buy the USDM standard Turbo for it? I would prefer having something that spools fast and give me a lot of mid-range punch, since this car is my daily drive.
What other mods would you guys suggest?

Mitsi has released a revised version on the mag turbo that has apparently fixed it, so you could look into that.

If I´m understanding you correctly you already have an Evo IX, which is a JDM model and has a magnesium wheel/shaft JDM IX turbo. My advice is that if it aint broke dont fix it.

Why would you go and change to a USDM IX turbo as you would be taking a step down in performance. The USDM turbo is slower spooling than the excellent turbo that you already have. Keep your turbo!

My JDM Evo IX has the magnesium Ti turbo. It blew up after 3000km, completely stock, no boost controller, nothing. I was still running in the car, so hadn't pushed it yet.

I went to my dealer to get a replacement, they said Japan is hugely backordered for this part because of the large number of mag Ti turbo failures worldwide. Singapore was also having huge number of problems with the JDM turbo at stock boost levels.

Finally I went for the tried-and-true JDM Evo 8.5 turbo. I can't notice the difference between the Evo 9 and Evo 8.5 turbo (note it is NOT the same as the Evo 8 turbo). The 8.5 turbo holds up under high boost for extended periods without problem.

I would say NOT to get the JDM Evo IX turbo again, or you'll simply get into the same trouble. I'd suggest getting either the tried-and-true 8.5 or the upgraded turbos available.

Wait until the shaft actually breaks before buying another turbo. Anyway, Mitsubishi Corp. should replace it if it were to break, when and if it actually does. In the meantime spend your money on power adding mods. Don't replace parts before they break.

But, if you're still heart-set on getting rid of her, put a price on her and I'll take her off your hands. I have a soft spot for potentially self destructive IX turbos with magnesium cartridges. I'll give her a good home.

Sadly, Mitsubishi is not being cooperative about this. Since i bought the car as a grey import. JDM models should stay in Japan, and when it's being exported elsewhere, they will not be responsible for anything. But as far as I know, not even the cars in Japan are being taken care of by Mistubishi. No recalls, no warranty.

That sucks man. I wish they would just take care of things when they know they have gone wrong.

Indeed, they wouldn't warranty my turbo because they consider the turbo to be like "brake pads"... expendable items.

I wonder if anyone has compared the Evo 8.5 Ti turbo to the Evo 9 Ti turbo? Any performance differences?

If it isnt an RS then it doesnt have the Mag Ti turbo and you have nothing to worry about.
