Yes, if the motor is cold you will get blow by past the rings. Do the test with a warm motor while everything is still seated up.

I finally did a boost leak test on my EVO today and found NO LEAKS!!!!

I looked around, listened, felt around all the connections/piping with my hands and ears and everything was kosher, even with 20 psi going thru the system.

well, my MBC vacuum line had a small leak since I didnt zip tie it, so I double zip tied it ha ha

maybe this will be a dumb question but here it goes.
Doing the boost leak test, you only have to connect the hose with the valve steam to the turbo inlet and pressurize the system including the intake manifold, isnt it??
if valves at any cylinders in the engine are in overlap, wouldn't pressure drop because of this???
Thanks, and dont flame me.

A valid question. The motor likes to stop in certain spots, due to valve spring tension. You'll notice this if you've ever rotated a motor by hand. In countless boost leaks tests on this car and the DSMs, I've never had one stop in overlap.

OHHHH, ok, got it. Like when you move by hand an engine sometimes tends to spin faster, thats like when a cilinder had just finished the compression stroke.
Thanks a lot.

Should be tested up to 30psi.

What boost leak tester do you use? The Home Depot tester I made up started to balloon pretty good at 25 PSI. I didn't trust it to go any higher.

It's odd to me that a 6 psi drop in boost pressure on the dyno graph wasn't a sign it had something wrong with it.

It's 4 hours from Indy to Ohio and 6 psi drop would have been detected, checked and fixed.

To each their own.
