Does Your Turbo Surge??

Hi All,

I would like to hear feedback from members regarding your experience with compressor surge using turbos in varrious setups on the evo. Please take a minute to share the following:

Turbo
Cams
BOV
Displacement
Does it surge

I am trying to make some decisions about what path to head down with a future build. Any input you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Turbo - White Rabbit
Cams - HKS 272s
BOV - Tial
Displacement - Stock
Surge - No

Part of the reason for this may be my method of boost control. I'm using the MaftPro to control boost and my wastegate duty cycle remains at 0% until my TPS voltage reaches a set value (I don't recall where I have it set, but it's around 4 volts).

No.
Only posting my experience. I am hoping to get a fairly large database of general setups to try to see trends. Thanks everyone for responding so far!

Your setup looks very similar to mine! Very interesting. I am not familiar with MaftPro. . . will have to do some research. . .

I only experience surge in the upper gears during part throttle release, say going from 80% throttle down to 30-40% throttle, and the weather has to be below about 45 F. If it's warmer than that, no surging. No surging at WOT, and no surging when just cruising in any gear.

maybe you should define the symptoms of surge, so you don't end up with some other occurrence that is misinterpreted.

thanks
bruce
ps I don't know if I have ever experienced surge

2 types I am familiar with:
LOW RPM SURGE: You go WOT in 5th gear at 2500 or 3000 rpms and your turbo makes a "choo choo choo" sounds as there is a rapid pressure differential happening. Usually occompanied by the BOV opening and closing rapidly. Basically the turbo is trying to blow more air into the engine than it can use.
PART THROTTLE SURGE: You go to pass a semi on the freeway and you give it say, 1/2 throttle. Your boost comes up a bit, say 5-15psi, but doesn't max out because you aren't wide open. The BOV flutters/stutters, and if violent enough the car can buck back and forth. You need to let off the gas or go full throttle to get rid of it. In my situation it happens when I try to hold part throttle through a turn on a race track.

(this is all just *to the best of my knowledge*. this is the way I understand surge from what I've read on here and other sites)

That low RPM surge you speak of is not surge - thats just a BOV not opening up lol The Partial Thottle Surge is more like it and happens to a lot of people! Even stock!

It is surge. It can be related to how the turbo and BOV work together. Every stock EVO I have ever driven does not have this. You can modulate the boost with throttle application. As you give it more gas and let off the boost will rise and fall smoothly in proportion to the amount of throttle. Please post the specs of you car when you experienced this. Thanks.
