just installed evo 9 turbo...

I just got done installing my evo 9 turbo on my evo 8. I took it for a drive but now when it spool up instead of the typical sound we get, I get more of a high pitch sound. It almost like a whistling sound. I also upgraded my piping upper and lower and intake to full aluminum. Is this normal? I need to know if there is something wrong with the turbo. Thanks.

There may be other causes, but a turbo on my old DSM whistled when the compressor wheel got damaged by sucking in part of a gasket. I assume you have a used 9 turbo. Did you have a close look at the wheels before installing the turbo?

the turbo wont spool up at all if the compressor wheel is damaged? right? the car feels slow and im only getting up to 18 psi...... there has to be a leak somewhere. As soon as the turbo spool up i get that high pitch sound...... could the o2 housing leak cause that much noise?

the answer can only be found doing a boost leak test, get off the boards and get to work!

will do, ill check all my piping connections, if that doesnt fix it i need to learn how to do that boost leak test. I hope its not the 02 housing to the hotside, that would be a pain to get to the bolts....

I had something similar happen to me, it was just a stupid mistake on my part...

I had the IC pipe on and the coupler on properly, but in my haste I tightened the clamp at an angle, the pipe wouldn't blow off, but it was also just enough to let air leak out. Check the couplers and clamps good.

Ram,

If you are in Tucson let me know so I can help you to leak test the car. Have you mess around with the MBC? I am assuming you would have to readjust the boost since you have a bigger unit.

Having replaced the UICP and lICP plus the turbo the most probable cause you are experiencing is a boost leak. It would sound high pitch and it would rob boost(air exiting the pipes)

If I was you I would first take off the Intake and check the compressor wheel, because when I upgraded my Evo8 turbo to a TME, I got a sound like somebody was screaming everytime the car would boost. The thing about the turbo was working, I checked all the connections everything and everything was fine. It was until I took off the intake and saw the compressor wheel and it looked like is been chewing on nuts and bolts with oil as its drink, I knew the problem. Its not an expensive fix though.
