Yeah, but if they weren't so weak they'd probably withstand the greater temps. It's a done deal, man. Less fluid in the MR trannys = hotter temps = busted weaker gears. It's bound to happen. We MR owners just have to have a clutch AND tranny fund. Let razorlab do his thing. Maybe his tranny cooler is the difference between Al Qaeda gearboxes and worry free track fun...

Cool

Jon (AKA Gears),
Bill Z's oil cooler looks like the one on the attached link...actually this is my car, but since Bill got SCCA to approve this one we all have to use the same one. Sounds like I'll be the lone 6-Spd on the T2 National circuit next year and therefore we will be speaking pretty soon. May be time to request a larger heat exchanger and plan to swap fluid after ever race. Both Marty and Bill have been VERY happy and done exceptionally well with your 5-Spds, so if I grenade my 6, the discussion of if you want to upgrade it or recommend a 5-spd swap will be in order

BTW the 5-spd in my GVR4 has held up great after the 3/4 gear oil sprayer was installed...no more exploding gears and that is with ~430AWHP/~400AWTQ and 30min races.

yes I would love to see this 9.8 second 6 speed evo... searching evo forums right now and typing in 9.8@141mph on the search and see nothing from an MR.... please show me where you see a 9.8 sec 6 speed..

Guys, It is more than the heat that is causing this. It is the STRESS/LOAD that driving on the road course puts on the small 4th gear. It does not happen in atuox because you do not use 4th gear much. It does not happen in drag racing because it is only one pass and then you rest the car. In road racing the gear that is used the most is 4th gear and you are @ WOT almost all the time in 4th gear. That is why it breaks in the MR.

Your best option is to use the 5 speed tranny. The is the cheapest way to do it. Coolers will not help you. The tranny will break again. Pay now for a 5 speed and get it over with rather than having to fix the 6 speed over and over again.

It is not a panic attack...It is REAL...If you road race your MR EVO, then you will break your tranny. It will happen, it is just a matter of time. If you do not road race your MR Evo, then you have nothing to worry about.

not me... I'm glad I bought my IX GSR. In fact I knew before I bought my evo that the 5 speed can handle more and it can handle what I intended to buy the car for, I plan on building a 600-700+hp car for drag. I had a chance to get an MR and had the money but when i read tilton didn't make a clutch for the 6 speed, it was game over for buying the MR. I know it's does REALLY break but the chances aren't as big as lets say spinning a rod bearing.. I think there are more people who throw a rod bearing than break a 4th gear in a 6 speed tranny. Im laughing about the people in this thread regretting that they bought an MR because of a hand full of people breaking thier 4th gears, when other things can break on their cars also..

I've read that the stack style are much more efficient at cooling.

Actually, I think it's funny because some people who are panicking will probably never track their 6 speeds... Beat it til you break it, then get something better. That's the credo of the "More money than brains club".

How can you spell breaks right one time and the spell it wrong 2 words later? Human minds work in weird ways.
