it all depends on how it was taken care of. usually the 03 and 04 8's were weaker in the Transfer case due to the front diff being open. eventually, after many a hard launches, it begins to whine. gets hella annoying.

mine was doing it, so i sent mine to shep to get built. i think i would have done it anyway, as its usually a weak point on awd cars, especially if you frequent the drag strip. i had my tranny built too, but that was holding up perfectly fine before i had it built.

check out the search feature, as you'll find tons and tons on this topic. laater

Transcases from evo viii to xi are not weak and can not be changed into racing ones. This is the opposite case for evo iv to evo vi.I know because i have an evo vi 1000hp and i do not know what to do with the transfer case, because is the cars only fault,i tried to find a company to get me a custom racing one like they do for evos vii-ix but was pointless.

Unlike the daily report of EVO VII~IX transfer case failures, I haven't heard about any EVO IV~TME transfer case failures over here in Japan. Is your EVO VI a GSR or an RS? The biggest issue with the CN9A/CP9A (EVO IV~TME) is the viscous center diff. There are quite a few 550~750whp EVO IV ~TME that cbeat up the circuits and streets of Japan. With our model of car you will need to change the VCU center diff to an aftermarket mechanical diff. Also, if your car is an AYC equipped GSR you will need to change the rear diff and axles. It is easier to just find an RS rear assembly. The CN9A/CP9A AYC rearends do not like high horsepower and the aftermarket AYC replacement diffs sometimes cost twice as much as a replacement RS diff.

Why do the axles need to be changed when changing from AYC to a conventional diff? Since the AYC pumpkin is larger the axles are shorter. You wil also save weight by changing to an RS setup because you will be able to remove the AYC pump assembly.
