As some of you might remember from my technical article on the last EVOM newsletter, I had a new engine combo I was working on.

After much R&D and having custom parts made the real deal is here. I'll disclose exact details soon but here are the basics.

AMS 23RR (road racing) Engine Program
Displacement: 2.3L
Compression: 9.0:1 9.5:1 10:1 available
Crank: Custom stroke forged Cr-Mo
Rods: Custom length forged
Pistons: Custom forged lightweight racing design - 20% lighter than our previous pistons!
RPM limit Drag/Street: 9100 RPM
RPM limit Road Racing/Endurance: 8500RPM

I've optimized the internal engine dimensions to create a great race engine. Originally I designed it for Road Racing applications, specifically for our Time Attack car. The goal was to broaden the powerband by extending the RPM limits and making more torque down low. Basically to have the low end grunt and spool up of a 100mm 2.3 stroker with the top end power and rev range of a 2.0L

Piston speed is a major factor in determining the EVO's RPM limit. Piston weight and rod ratio also affect RPM limits. By just looking at piston speeds, this engine can safely rev 450-550rpm higher than a 100mm 2.3 stroker. I've rated this engine based on Piston Speed alone but for reference, the better rod ratio and lighter pistons will account for another 200-300rpm higher potential.

Here is a graph showing a direct before and after test of the engine. The new engine also includes a cleaned up head. Boost is 21psi dropping to 19psi and timing was 1-2 degrees lower on the new engine combo. Besides pulling 1-2 deg of timing out, I had to add about 10% fuel across the whole RPM range.





For reference, here is my car when it was stock. Notice that spool up is like stock.
Again 93 octane at 21psi dropping to 19psi.




I'm pretty excited about this engine. The turbo is pretty close to being maxed out and the stock intake manifold is holding it back up top. I'll make some smart upgrades soon to add even more power up top and keep the spool. Right now the car is a blast to drive. It has torque all over the place and pulls like mad up top.

what are the advantages of having 10:1 compression over 9:1 ?

 

^ Higher compression ratio should mean earlier spoolup, but may not allow you to run as much boost.

Martin, some questions:
- Are all of the charts on 93 octane?
- Are the dyno charts based on 9:1 compression ratio?
- For the higher compression ratios, how much boost do you think it will be able to maintain before detonating?
- Cost?
- You stated that the head was "cleaned up" - was it a full port (in other words, like the head on my car)?
- Will you be testing the VSR intake on this engine?

I'm very interested in seeing the spoolup characteristics of the RR engine with a fully ported head and VSR intake on a 93 octane tune.

Quicker response while off boost maybe. I'm sure there are other reason but that seems to stick out in my head most. If it is indeed a dedicated track machine and is going to be used with race fuel, then............

price?price?price? What kind of turbo setup could you put on it with the 10:1 or which one would prolly be best i might say

 

My guess would be $4500 with block.

$3500 with core.

Will you sell this kit with out haveing the block built by you guys. So could we just buy the kit and get it done on our own.
