Unhappy Rear Diff???

Crusing along today on the NJ Turnpike in fifth, doing nothing crazy. All of a sudden a crunching sound coming from the rear. I pull over and look under the car. Oil dripping (not pouring) out of the rear diff. I put it in gear and slowly let out the clutch. Moving now, but crunching/grinding sound coming from diff. Towed to TurboTrix. Any thoughts or ideas?

Was it pouring out of the drain hole/bolt area? Either way that isn't good ... Your rear diff might be toast ...

Oil coming from drain plug, i think

I am told that it is one of two things. It is either the pinion gear (stripped off teeth, etc.) or it is the diff. Now tell me, is this correct? Gears =$400+ Diff=$1100+

I take it that you are modded and warranty is not a option.

at least he was smart enough to have it towed and didnt drive it after the fact.. risking further, unforeseen damage!?

Warranty? HAHAHAHA!! Yea, and pigs may fly. I drove it about 1/4 mile to get it off the turnpike because AAA can't pick it up on that highway. But other than that.... Its either the diff itself or just the pinion gears. I hope its the latter.

I doubt you will find a shop that will just replace the pinion gears if that is what is broken. The fact that all of those metal chunks were circulating throughout the rear housing makes all of the bearings and other gear teeth suspect. There are enough wrecked Evos out there you should be able to find a complete diff.

What exactly is in that rear diff case? I looked at Cusco rear diff's and they are about $1100. Is that about right?

I have to wonder if the oil wasn't dripping before and the diff just seized before grenading on you. I guess that could have happened with a loose drain plug or some king of seal.

I don't trust Ebay for important parts like diffs and transmissions but to each his own. Did you crack the casing and this is the reason your considering this diff? If so I would spend the 4 dollars and shop around a pick N pull first for a casing and get one for probably the tune of 40 dollars.

If that diff has AYC it will not fit.
