You are exactly right. We gasket match the ports so they will flow the best possible. Then we deep port the runners so they match the ports. If you opt for the Swaintech coating you will lower your underhood temps and have something awesome to look at. You will not be disappointed with a PPi manifold.
Speaking from experience I have owned the SSAC tubular manifold and I had to have one welded because it cracked, on this car it was still using the stock O2 housing so there is no reason it should have had the weight stress that cracks these. It may look cool but looks are not everything.

Whats external porting of the manifold? I'm thinking package deal with ported and coated hotside and manifold. Dont know if I want to do another o2 housing swap... That thing was horrible.
External porting removes all casting flash, anti-lag ports, and heat shield bosses. Or here is a picture to show it more detailed.

To port the Hotside you would have to remove the O2 housing...unless you are really motivated of course!
