Evo losing juice

Guys,

I'm having a problem with my car cutting out around 6,000rpms full throttle. It seems like it's choking then I can feel the car bog down. Other than that if my rpms are low it never does it at all. I'm spiking a lot higher than stock boost since it's really cold out here in Minnesota. I'm thinking fuel cut since I dont have a walboro fuel pump and no tune.

Mods are AMS intercooler, catless TB exhaust, downpipe, JDM MR BOV, summitracing oil cooler. Some input would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like a boost cut to me, not a fuel cut. Mine was sorted when my custom tuner tweaked my map, but you should be able to deal with this with a boost controller, just to prevent the spiking

Yeah that sounds odd.. But to me it does sound like a fuel cut. How bad does it bog? Because a fuel cut will almost stop a car in it tracks. You will know when that happens.

You have a $700 FMIC that is of no use on your Evo, but you don't have a tune? What is the deal with people? I just don't understand it. It kills me that people do this to their Evos.

Dude, get an MBC and a tune. Why would you have an FMIC for $700 that does nothing instead of an MBC and tune for $400-500 that would give you 30-50whp while keeping your boost where it should be and avoiding fuel cut? I'm just baffled...

Ghoonk, there is no boost cut - it's all fuel cut. FUel cut is caused when the MAF senses air flow beyond the preset limit in the ECU. This can be caused by the air being much denser in cooler weather even at the same boost level and/or by boost being too high. People mistakenly refer to it as boost cut, because it usually happens when boosting too high, but it's simply being caused by the fact that the airflow max is being exceeded, which then causes the ECU to cut fuel.
However, the way he said it feels like the car is choking then bogging down does NOT sound like fuel cut. Fuel cut is when the car hits a brick wall and basically shuts down. There is no bogging. He might be experiencing the dreaded Intake Snorkel Broken Clip Syndrome...

For future reference, here's my calling card:

Let me add to the current suggestions that it could also be misfire due to worn plugs.. Another thing people neglect.

In that case, I would expect a distinct sputtering that would occur at higher load areas lower in the RPM range, but it's certainly a very common issue that is overlooked as you said.

Warralton,

Just FYI, I replaced intercooler since I damaged the stock one in an accident. I wouldn't have done it, but since I replaced the front bumper, might as well upgrade, right?

Yeah it's more like a sputtering of the engine, just like it kicks off for a second. Thanks for the info, but I'll get a tune once it gets a little warmer.

I think Warr is on the right track with the " Intake Snorkel Broken Clip Syndrome"

Are you running the stock intate? If so then are you missing the clips that hold the snorkle down? If you are missing these then it can seal to the hood under high boost and smother the engine producing the symptoms you are describing.

no I'm not missing the clips. Just checked my K&N drop in filter last sunday when doing an oil change. Not sure when I'm getting a tune, kid is hatching in 3 months. My car is nothing compared to my kid.

Once you start changing the car you should have some kinda of tune in place to compensate, it sounds like fuel cut, but check your fuel filter. also a walbro couldn't hurt for $90 or whatever they go for now!...

I have a fuel pump, but havent' installed it. It's been so cold here and we were recovering from like 2 ft. of snow.

Drop in a fresh set of NGK BPR7ES gapped to .026, then put in the fuel pump right when you get flashed.

You don't have to have a flash to install a fuel pump. It just makes more sense though. To me it sounds like boost spiking and then fuel cut.
