Basic Bolt on help

Hey guys. I'm new to the whole Evo tuning thing, and I just have a question about putting basic bolt ons on an Evo 8. I'm planning on putting just a cat back exhaust, intake, and downpipe on my Evo. My question is: Is the motor going to run lean at all if i put these things on? Should I invest in some sort of fuel controller? What are some things that I should do to safeguard my engine? Thanks for all your help.

get your ECU flashed for your specific mods when putting them on. there are several ways to do it. you can order a tactrix cable and purchase a flash that gets emailed to you to put on your car, you can mail the ecu out to be flashed, several tuners make trips around the US and you can get a flash at one of these events, or seeing that you're in ohio, you could swing by bushcur racing and have them custom dyno tune your car.

Welcome. The search function on here will be your friend.

I would recommend the mods you mentioned for bolt-ons. I ran an intake and exhaust without a tune for a month or two (as a daily driver), but getting a tune would be best. Here's your best bang for the buck:

Full turbo-back exhaust (w/ test pipe) :$500-1000 depending on the brand.
Upgraded fuel pump: $80, A good investment with higher boost and airflow.
Boost controller: $100-$150, I recommend Hallman.
Tune: $200-$300 through the mail (Dynoflash, Jestr, AMS, etc.).
Intake: $90-$250. "Iffy" on the gains, a panel filter might do just as well.

All those at once (roughly $1300) will make you happy.

I'm no expert, but I've had fun with the above mods and a few more. Good luck.

Thanks for all your help guys. I'm definatly going to get a reflash as soon as I get anything done to it. Also, rcheung, why shouldn't I get an intake?

you can get an intake just make sure you research and get tuned for it....stay away from the K&N typhoon its ****e. I would recommend getting intakes from known/prover companies like Buschur Racing, HKS, ARC, etc....

definitely scrap the intake idea, that will make you run lean. Swap the intake for a custom tune or mail in flash, and like others have said, search the forums, you'll be much wiser and in a better position to decide which mods work best for your application.

I'd recommend an email tune... Should give you more power gains than any of the above mods by themselves. $89 for a tactrix cable as mentioned above + $52 for an email tune from Jestr tuning according to your list of mods at that time.

The car should be fine with the mods for a few days until you get it tuned (just make sure you get a boost guage and don't turn the boost up too high). Take the money you were going to spend on an intake, and go with the tune.

You can always get a $60 cone filter to hear the "whoosh".

Conical intake will likely make the car run richer at peak boost and the exhaust will have it run leaner which would help even things out. You should however invest in an ECU reflash. We have options from $50 to $299 full custom remotEflash.
