Transfer Case ring and pinion questions
I may sound like a noob but why havent we found a way to fabricate the ring and pinion inside the transfer case??? It just seems crazy that mitsubishi doesnt sell them seperate and that you have to buy a whole new transfer case. It seems like a money making scheme. why couldnt reputable people like shep and teamrip sent an undamaged ring and pinion gear to a machinist of some sort and have them fabricate new ones? I'm sure if we tried to do this we could come up with a solution. I'm willing to try and look into this when I buy a new transfer case.
correct me if I'm wrong but wouldnt all you have to do if you have the ring and pinion is replace them...then replace the spider gears with a quaiffe lsd or such. and then have a local transmission shop do any other kind of thing that would need to be done???
just seems crazy to buy new transfer cases for just the ring and pinion... I'm sure it could be made

I can feel you brother got the same thing here its my second time that it breaks and i need to change the whole transfer case again just because of that pinion and ring what a shame ......the transfer case is soo expensive and hard to find keep me updated if you find any solution....thanks
ya, I just talked with shep trans the other day and I was very surprised when they told me I couldnt just buy a new ring and pinion to put in. If anyone knows of someone who sells individual ring and pinioins my wallet and I would love to know!
I don't understand it either. I got tired of my **** breaking and bought a used one off ebay. Then i sent the ring & pinion off to be cryo'ed. Seems alot smoother and its still going (few thousand miles on it) with a few speed runs in there.

the other day shep told me that they get new ring and pinions in their shop but will not sell them. I am guessing that this is because if they sold ring and pinions they would lose 50% of their business from people with blown ring and pinions who send their whole t cases in to get it repaired or people who buy a whole new t case from them. If people could simply buy a new ring and pinion, almost any tranny or rear end shop could install it. So what me, and everyone with a blown ring and pinion, needs is a gear company like Richmond to machine an evo ring and pinon and put it on the market for everyone, not just Shep. If this were avalible to me now, I would save several hundred dollars over sending my unit to shep. as I will have to do in a few days since I have no other options for fixing it. If anyone knows of a better way to go please let me know asap!
This thread is great as I was thinking the same exact thing today. I just got lucky and found a used tcase off another member. There tough to find used and spending thousands new per unit is disgusting. We need a ring and pinion replacement.
I feel your pain brothers!!! A $900 upgrade turned into a $3000 replacement...................
I would recommend anyone to make this one of your intial mods if plain on being serious.....will save you more money in the long run!.......
I just recieved my new transfercase couple days ago from shep ....still waiting on the tranny figured would send it to him while the tranny was good for upgrades.....
Come to figure out is cheaper to fix before it is broke....
