i know that sound....my friends EVO has a bad TC and it wines just like that....very annoying and super loud on accel. Even at 3000rpm it is really loud.

Change your TC fluid and again, check for metal flakes/bits in the fluid and on the drain plug.....good luck!!

Hrm interesting, mine's had a wine similar to that at very low speeds since I drove it off the lot.

 

in the last video it was really loud, but it does sound like a tornado siren or some natural disaster siren, i guess if my tcase ever starts going out on me ill know what sound to listen for

Now I finally know what a bad TC sounds like.

I think the first couple of seconds of the second video and the majority of the third video really demonstrate what a bad TC sounds like.


After reading your story I opened up a new window and checked out some of the prices for Sheperd Racing TC's..............

I feel your monetary pain.

Quicktime opens this type of file. Just install Apples Quicktime and you should be good to go.

 

Yeah, anyone with Itunes on their computer shouldn't have any issues opening the files within the zip file. That really does "clear the air" for what the sound is like.

I have a similar whine( not as loud though). Weird thing is though in my case, it only happens when I hit the accelerator. If I release th gas it stops, apply the gas, the noise ensues. Are these symptoms of a transfer case going bad?

 

Sounds like it. Mine did the exact same thing. At first I didn't believe it was the transfer case either because if a gear is wearing out, it should whine wether I step on the gas or not. I was wrong. I think eventually it will happen wether your off the gas or on the gas then fail and lock up all four wheels. I am not taking that chance and am waiting until my new transfer case comes in. I already think my 2003 evo handles exceptionally well compared to alot of other high end cars. When my tcase with the RA LSD comes in I hope it handle like alot better.

 

actually NO!! shepard racing even stated that 90% of the blown transfer cases are because of wrong fluid, use only mitsu oil in the TC!!
