Want to know what a tcase whine sounds like? Video Inside.
Evo is new to me.Still getting used to all the sounds.Anyhow she used with 38k and remaining factory drivetrain warranty until 60k.I hear a whine in low rpm in first gear sounds almost like im supercharged for a sec. Then it tones down and goes away before the end of first and second gear entry. Is this anything to worry about?Cant play your video to see if yours is similar.
It's done that since it was new though, so I assume it's "normal".
Is the transfer case going out on an 03 Evolution inevitable. As someone in the market for an 03 this is a very eye opening thread. I don't own an Evo yet but this makes me nervous. Did you guys just get hit with bad luck or is this normal?
most ring and pinion TC failures(which causes the famous whine)are from not enough fluid or the wrong fluid being used. just use the stock diaqueen, change every 10K or so, and it should be fine. most of the time drag launches will bust the diff in the TC, not the ring/pinion. shep does have the ability to rebuild bad ring/pinion TC's now though so you no longer have to buy a whole new case.
Files don't work for me either, and I usually can figure any file out.
BTW my 05 with ~55k miles got a small fluid leak on the transfer case and started making tons of noise. In a very short period of time (50 miles?) it pretty much toasted itself.

oh crap. sounds like my car...just got a new exedy twin plate installed a few days ago and now this sound just started.....aaaaa!
edit - what usually causes this? I only launch my car at autoX events, that's it...is it hard launches or hard/bad shifting or...????

My car makes a noise but it sounds like the serpentine belt. It is a whistle and only comes on under WOT. At part throttle or "cruising" it doesn't make a sound.
I would like to take it to a Mitsu dealership but the closest one is about 80 miles away. I will try to get a sound clip of it to post it and compare. Since you were the one doing this I figured I would ask you if it sounded like a belt before it started the death whine. Since sound always loses something through camera phones.
Where did the noise sound like it is coming from? The noise on my car is coming from the right front. I don't think the tcase is there but like you said the noise can travel through the drive shaft. Thanks for your input

Hmmm...did a little experimenting with my whine last night and it only seems to happen at high speed, 3rd gear and up, and under high load. At 220+ km/h it does scream like the OP's vid but during normal driving, nothing and its much quieteer under decellerartion.
Not sure if it is transfer case Death Whine per say but it's definitely something to do with gears so getting the fluids all changed ASAP in any case and we'll see.
BTW, saved one of the OP's vids in MP4 format, hosting it on my photobucket account. To view it just download VLC player (which opens *everything* except WMV files - veryuseful little app) , takes 2 minutes.
linky - death whine vid
edit: sorry, it encoded away the visuals but you still have the sound
