Whining. Possible rear diff, maybe?

03' VIII.

I'm hoping some of you can give me an idea with whats going on with my car. Heres the issue(s)

1)When driving there is an abnoixously loud whining that appears to be coming from the REAR of the car (so loud I can hear it with the radio absolutely cranked).
2)I get the a whining whenever I'm on the throttle.
3)When I am in nuetral and moving I notice noise similar to a constant ambulance siren. Also, from the rear.
4)There is NO NOISE when I'm in gear and decelerating (engine braking, no throttle)

Recently my car has not been driving right. The car would not achieve normal boost, so I've been driving it with reduced boost for a while until Sunday when I fixed that problem (which I will post seperately about). Anyhow, the morning after the car was fixed is when I got the noise. Maybe its related, maybe its not.

Can anyone point me in a direction with this? Rear diff? Pinion bearing? It doesn't seem like its coming from the transfer case () but I won't rule it out. I have diff noise on my 88' Corolla but its only within a certain speed.

I'm thinking T-case. The harmonics travel down the drive shaft to the rear of the car giving some the assumption that its a problem with the rear diff.

Yes - I had that same problem in my race evo - sounded like a rear diff but it was the front transfer case

Well, if there's a boost issue, I'd start there. Do a boost leak test and then take some logs. I don't know man but if you don't hear it when you're decelerating, I'm not so sure it's drivetrain related. If it were the rear end or something, you'd hear it all the time the car is moving I'd think...

Thanks for the input.

I'll have to try the soundbite later because my work computer doesnt have quicktime. I'll also see if I can get a better trained ear to listen to the noise. I suppose I'll start looking into transfer cases. I do suppose that a rear diff would make noise cornering on decel in gear.

There doesnt seem to be a boost issue. The car boosts just fine now. I had leak tested the system numberous times before fixing my other problem.

If its possible, post your soundbyte also so we can have a better idea of what it sounds like exactly. Eventually , the mods will hopefully pull all the posts together with soundclips and turn them into a megathread.

It is the Transfer Case.

Thanks for posting the sound clip.

Perhaps the reason it seemed like it was coming from the rear was because of my energy suspension carrier bushings. I'm going to give ShepTrans a call tomorrow about it and go from there.
