Gear oil dripping

I have an oil leak - smelled it and it's gear oil. It's only a few drops after I've driven it. If I let it sit it stops dripping.

I had a clutch installed about 1000 miles ago so I searched on here for some reasons. It appeared the best answer was to replace the 2 o-rings between the tranny and transfer case. Had that done today at my mechanic, but it is still leaking.

Another suggested cause is the axles, so I will have the mechanic look at that tomorrow. Also the rear seal in the transfer case where it connects to the driveshaft, but that isn't where we are seeing oil so I don't believe it's that.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on where to look or what to look for?

Sorry I can't be specific yet about where the leak is coming from - hopefully I'll know tomorrow.

Any help is appreciated!

Read my drives.

my first leak came from a faulty ACD line fitting. right at the front of the driveshaft. damaged upon installation. leaked and srayed down the underside of the car. smelled oil burning from the downpipe. got worse until i started seeing smoke.

2nd leak, was from the transfer case in an unservicable area. they had to replace the transfercase. this all happed under 2k.

hasnt been leaking lately. good luck

LOL thanks. I'm so modded right now it doesn't matter if I only has 10 miles on the car. I accepted that when I started - I was just hoping to get some mileage before getting a new TC

OK, I lucked out. Turns out the o-ring for the crank sensor was broken.

After they replaced the o-rings between the transfer case and the tranny it still leaked. Looked down from the top of the engine and saw a puddle of oil sitting on the tranny. Took the battery out so we could see, and that's what it was.

Hope this helps someone else.

The o-rings for between the TC and tranny were like $5-6 total from Mitsubishi. The o-ring they replaced on the crank sensor was free because they had one. Installation was free because they were the ones that put my tranny in, and because my mechanic is my neighbor

Sorry, I don't know what a shop would charge to replace them.
