Dumb question on UICP
Replacing the pipes with pipes the same diameter and same amount of bends as factory are not going to do anything for you. Shortening the pipes on the other hand will actually give you slightly more power. That's why the companies that are actually pushing big numbers require smaller batteries.
Stock < Dejon < Injen < Buschur
If I were you I'd get the Injen UICP, which would mount right up to the Deluxe FMIC and you would not have to replace the battery. Now, my recommendation would be to get Buschur's UICP, with the mini battery and get the Deluxe core if you couldn't get the Race care! The Race FMIC is a mod you would install and never have to worry about the intercooler again! Point blank, no matter how stock or how tough you make your EVO, the Race FMIC would be able to handle all mods and you would just be done with it!!
Alibi: You are correct air flows over a smooth surface much better, however have you looked inside the soft IC Pipes, they are extremely smooth. So IMO no difference there.
The fact that harder pipes do not flex are a +1, however that creates very little gain.
Now I do not claim to be an expert, but what I am typing is information that does come from the experts!
