EVO IX 5th gear problem - Not grinding!!!

for two days now the car developed a strange vibration/noise while in 5th gear.

The gearbox feels the same, no problems...

However while driving and changing from 4th gear to 5th gear the car starts to vibrate and make a weird noise. The noise is not continuous and in intervals... It sounds like...

woomm... woomm... woomm.. woomm... every second or so! when i accelerate the noise/vibration accelerates too, when i decelerate the same...

when i remove the gear and go into neutral, the vibration/noise goes away i think...

also i feel the vibration under the pedals while in 5th gear.

when starting in 1st, 2nd, 3rd nothing. everything feels normal. When going into 4th i start feeling a slight vibration and then in 5th gear the vibration/noise described above...

checked underneath the car, everything normal. checked engine mounts, look solid...

Anyone with similar symptoms?

What it might be? transfer case? gearbox?

I'm confused too, are you sure that you are not driving over rough road?

Does it make that noise in 5th at a certain speed or also in 5th? I would say its the tranny, and dont you have a warranty on it?

Does it come with any sort of speed... you can get a similar noise when tires are out of round or cupped a bit... I know you said you "think" it goes away when not in gear, that could be because you start to slow down once you disengage.

Just a thought before you start thinking about replacing a tranny.

first of all no i dont think any dealer will warranty my car and i dont really care. modded my car, knew that i will lose guarranty, but i am enjoying it 100%...

They say... if you want to play.. you have to pay...

The noise comes when in 5th gear. when i accelerate the noise/vibration accelerates too, when i decelerate, the noise/vibration decelerates too...

When in 5th gear driving, put into neutral, the vibration stops. As soon as put the car into 5th gear again the vibration/noise starts again...

I dont feel it in other gears. The car feels pretty much as always...

i am into conversations with John Shepherd and he said, probably is the 5th gear spline, which actually doesn't occur very ofter in the newer models but it can happen...

Tomorrow i will have the car checked out at a Mitsu service and then with some other Mitsu guys... If it is the gearbox, most probably it will be replaced by a Shepherd unit with the full treatment received...

I was in an old musclecar that did this exact thing, but it had a driveshaft out of balance. Definitely not what is happening to you. If Shepherd gave you his opinion, I'd take it. He knows more about these drivelines than most anyone.
