Underbody exhaust heat shield - Can i remove?

I got a rattling going on under my car. Its from my DIY rally cat hitting the heat shield under the car. Im considering removing the heat shields under the car. Are they really all that necessary? Does anyone think the exhaust heat could cause damage to the underbody?

I'm sure the engineers had a reason for them. I would watch where you park, and what you run over. Fires can be lit, lives can be lost. No but really, you should be alright. I wouldn't drive through any puddles or rivers or ish like that. I think they're for corrosion reasons anyways.

They are actually for keeping exhaust heat off the chassis.

If that were true they would only be on one side of the pipe. They keep heat in, not too eficient for keeping heat off the underbody.

?? They are on on one side of the exhaust, the top. The rubberized undercoating is for corrosion protection. Not trying to be an a-hole, but have you looked under your car?

No, i never mentioned the downpipe. Re-read my first post and you will understand what i mean.
But even the heat shield on the DP has nothing to do with under body corrosion.
