Oil consumption
I just finished reading a long-term test of a Euro-spec (Germany) Evo VII in Car magazine. The driver (Georg Kacher) said he was having to add almost a quart at every fill-up. Obviously this is a little disturbing. I checked my oil today and it was up to spec. There are no markings on the dipstick other than 2 notches. Common sense would dictate that normal would reside between the 2 notches, however I am new to the turbo game and I am not about to guess when it comes to the oil level. My oil is currently well above the 2 notches, so I am assuming I am good. Anyone hear of excess consumption of oil by their Evo? Also, if someone can confirm the oil level readings, that would be great.
The two notches on the dip stick are the min oil leve and max oil level. If your oil is above the top notch then you have to much in there and should drain some off.
Too much oil can cause all kinds of problems according to engine design. For example if too high the crankshaft can start "dragging" in the oil ( if oil was at normal level crankshaft would never touch the oil ) which will cause increased drag and rob you of power.
Another thing that can happen with too high an oil level is increased crankcase pressure, causing the engine oil seals to blow

Mine was a tiny bit over full (perhaps 1/3 cup, about a tenth of an inch on the stick) and still is at 2500 miles. Rods can slap and splash in it if over filled and in some cases other things can happen. My oil still looks and smells ok not very dirty and no metal flakes. I will let the dealer change it out at the 5000K first service as my contract with them stipulates. The sales staff had 509 miles on my car when I took delivery and I know they did not go easy on it. With 1500 on it, my son raced it against two other evos and had a fender on both of them at the Fremont drag strip, then took it past 150 with no smoke. I guess I'll keep it. You guys are prudent in being careful, these cars are worth savoring a little.
