Anyone ever had a transfer case go out?

(couldn't find anything on search)

So I've started getting some gear noise from my transfer case. I know it needs to be rebuilt, but how safe is it to drive the car as it is now?

Has anyone ever had theres completely go out on them, immobilizing the car?

Thanks!

There have been a number of people have their car lock up after the gears broke. There have also been threads upon threads on this topic. I spent many days combing through all of them by using that search button which everyone always has trouble finding topics covered many times over.

If it's your Transfer case, it'll sound like a fire engine siren under the car at highway speeds. If that's the case, it's toast --- park it asap --- preferably at the shop of choice. If it's the tranny, you still run the risk of chewing the other gears up with fragments from the one you lost.

Good luck with that!

I knew fully well the flaming that awaited me by posting this finding threads about blown t cases is easy, but everyone I could find just talked about noise and replacement, still have not seen one where the car was immobilized and found to be the Transfer case. This DOES NOT include cases where it suddenly went, I'm only talking about the whine that you slowly get as the ring and pinion wear a grove into each other, which is the condition to my understanding.

If that is the case, how safe is it to drive the car like this?

i guess it depends.... I have had my transfer case whining for about 12k miles it was making noise when it was bone stock, mitsu said it was normal and bring it back when something is broken so I have taken it to the track several times, been driving it cross country, spirited driving and nothing has happened as of yet (knock on wood)

Its really like playing with fire because you dont know if there may be sudden castostrophic failure. I've seen some cases where is was whining for a short while then all of a sudden boom the tcase falls apart. Then there are other cases I've seen where somone has the whine for over a year and it still drives fine. I guess unless you take it apart and have it looked at by an expert you really wont know.

I've got a stage 2 and have about 4K on it. I always get paranoid when I hear any kind of high pitch noise now but im pretty sure its not the tcase. How long have you had yours for?

I am suprised there wasn't any sort of recall on them. It sounds dangerous if it locks up while you're driving on the throughway.

If i were mitsu i wouldn't...half the retards out there that blow their TCases are dumping at 6500rpm+, using the wrong TC fluid ...i know of many evo owners that drive like they are crazy...however, they do make exceptions...i have a replacement TCase still in a box waiting

I was one of the retards that used the wrong fluid
