Porting inside hole of O2 housing - good idea?

So i need to get an O2 housing and my friend has one that he got from ebay (i don't think it's SS though) And he ported the wastegate hole on the inside, so it's pretty big now. It's obviousely not gonna have any boost creep issues with a larger hole, but should i be concerned with things like turbulence or different pressure drop to make it work not as good?

I'll be running 28 psi daily through it, which kinda makes me think that bigger hole will not be an issue. Just wanna make sure.

Thanks

Hmmm... Looks like it'll cause some turbulence with a hole that size.

A bigger hole will make more turbulence, but it seems prudent to open it up a bit if the hole is the infamous "quarter" size.

If you'll be running 28# on the stock turbo and that O2 Hsg., then you should maybe consider divorcing the gated chamber by welding in a blockoff and then run a dump pipe off the divorced gated chamber. Soon2BEVO claims success with this sort of configuration.

Otherwise that large of a merge opening looks like it would allow bypass flow to be disruptive of the main exducer flow. At 28# on the stock turbo you should also fully port the turbine housing's wastegate bypass port and run a Forge WGA.

^ I'll be running Green turbo if it makes a difference... I will also run an 18psi FP WGA, so i'm hoping WG will stay shut at least..

I'd like to have a dump pipe, but i have no ability to fab such a piece.. And no one makes those for sale yet...

Mrfred, yeah the quarter size opening is what prompted my friend to port it out. He might have gone a bit overboard though, which is my main concern...

From what I can see, the hole seems to be sorta randomly placed. If it needs to be enlarged, maybe just enlarge the downstream-side of the hole so that the flow more smoothly merges with the turbine flow.

Turbulence is definitely an issue. There is no real way of telling how much it will or if it will hurt performance unless you do an A to B test, which obvioulsy wont be done.

I would of course reccomend doing an actual 02 dump like I did, which completely divides the 2 chambers and allows the wastegate exhaust to dump to the atmosphere. If youre up for that, and willing to spend the money, you will see performance gains, that is for sure. No creep ever with the dump of course.

yeah the dump would be awesome, but i'm not sure i will have an ability to fab it.

I was thinking though, with higher boost, the hole can actually be the size of a nickel, abd not cause boost creep, because the wastegate will be mostly shut. So maybe i should just get a regular ebay housing? with smaller hole?

I agree that your best bet is to get a new aftrermarket O2 housing, with a normal sized, unadulterated, merge opening. Furthermore, I'd avoid potential headaches and get the Buschur Racing coated version, since they exhibit consistent construction quality from one unit to the next, whereas significant variance among the different EBay offerings has been reported on here.

I think that perhaps your friend went a bit overboard with the grinder. No offense intended but I wouldn't run that thing on my car. In fact, there may be no need for further porting of the O2 housing to control boost on your Green. So don't jump the gun and assume that the thing needs to be ported.

I've run 26# on my Green, which is equipped with the FP WGA, and an unported SSAC O2 housing, and I haven't experienced any creep yet. So yours should be able to adequately bleed off boost too. Good Luck!

Thanks for comments, guys. Nice to know we're all on the same page here. I think i'm gonna get a smaller hole housing for now and i would def love to look into open dump. It's a pity no shops fab those for sale yet...
